I was going through some stuff last week and rounded up enough parts to put together a H&R shotgun. Some time before I got the 410 barrel it was shortened a couple inches. Since it had no choke any way I decided to make it shorter. I cut it to 20 inches reamed the muzzle dressed it up with a file . So this is what I ended up with : 20 barrel no choke tamer stock fore arm held on with a thumb wheel bolt from a survivor fore arm 33.5 inches long. I grabbed an assorment of ammo and headed for the back yard :D it sot slugs well, federal "410 handgun"#000 (4 peices of buckshot) suprisingly well and shot patterned very evenly . After testing it, this is 15-18 yard gun for small game. sunday afternoon I parked my behind on a log and watched a squirrel meander through the woods from 100 yards away till he got to about 12 steps out from me one shot and I've got one fox squirrel. twenty minutes later another fat fox squirrel popped around a tree trunk and was added to the larder the distance was 14 steps. This is the third limited range gun I have hunted with I have hunted with an original enfield 410 and a 9mm smooth bore muzzle loader. Though challenging I have taken game with all of them
None of these guns would be high on my list of suvival guns, but the would beat a sharp stick . After hunting with this limited range when you switch back to a regular guns it seems all most like cheating . I think it is good practice if we ever do have to live of the land

Have to say I find it funny that you just happened to have enough parts to build a shotgun laying around. We have enough spare parts on the farm back home to build most of a tractor laying around, so I can't say a whole lot. Looks like a good little gun, only problem I have with those H&Rs is that they're cheap, effective, and insult my pride about my fancy Benelli that doesn't *really* do that much more when you get down to it.

I've taken to bowhunting, so I really appreciate the idea of hunting animals at close distances. Even hunting deer at 30 yards with a compound bow, I've found that it's really not that difficult to get that close if you hunt well. My longest shot for a deer with a rifle is about 70 or 80 yards, too.

Almost all squirrels and rabbits I shoot are easily within 20 yards.

those mods would get me shot on sight here in Canada.....

that being said, nice lil setup!

Your rig looks all right to me, not that that matters, but be VERY CAREFUL when cutting off a barrel.

NFA laws call for a specific measurement of barrel length, and it doesn't necessarily coincide with what *you* might think the barrel length is, and good faith is not a defense.

Good idea to go with the 20" to be safe. IIRC (and don't quote me), the ATF sticks an 18" rod into an unloaded barrel to determine barrel length.

I mention this but I invite those with more knowledge to set this issue straight.

Eatin tree rats tho? You lost me there.

The ATF also has a minimum overall length. I don't recall exactly what it is off the top of my head. 26in maybe?

Did much the same with a 20ga Stevens Model 94 a neighboring farmer was throwing out. He'd lost the foregrip, smushed the end of the barrel with some farm equipment, and the firing pin had rusted shut.

Cleaned it, freed up firing mechanism, put a foregrip from an old mauser (numrich parts cost more than the shotgun was worth), bored a hole in the pistol grip for a spare shell, drilled a hole in the barrel and put in a brass screw-sight, and cut barrel down to around 24 inches. So..probably open cylinder. Works a charm for jump shooting ducks from creek, a rabbit or two, and a couple of pheasants, hunting with a bird dog so flushes are close.

Get a hoot out of rescuing it and using this poor old beater to do just fine. :)

Really cool ittle gun you got there, looks like it'd be alot of fun.

No reason you couldn't use that exact same gun in Ontario (I thought gun laws were pretty much the same across Canada) as far as I know the min muzzle length is 470mm or 18.5 inches.

As for the style, someone might take a second look but I know a few people who are really into "tatical/ military style" guns. Doesn't matter what it looks like, as long as it's the right length and mag size.

I have a single shot H%R 410. A pretty good rabbit gun but terrible squirrel gun.

Here is mine. It's factory stock made by Savage. It is the Kamper KK1 model.

That reminds me of the Ruby ridge debacle. Someone claimed Weaver had a shotgun that was to short, (it ended up being .25" to short), and the FBI served a warrant which led to the FBI sniping his wife in the face while she stood on their porch holding their baby. IIRC they also killed his son.

I guess what I'm saying is be careful with barrel lengths.

Umm.. Randy Weaver was also an anti-government militant, with ties to the Aryan Nations. While I'm not promoting ownership of illegal weapons, there are a lot of people who have them, and they dont end up in a violent stand-off with Federal law enforcement.

I'm referring to the original warrant they were serving, it was for to short of a barrel.

Misunderstandings can have unintended consequences.

Up untill 2003 I carried a C&R ffl . You get sent all the law books every year . The laws for a shotgun are 18 inch barrel 30 inches over all length 16inch barrel/26 inches over all for rifle. my gun finished a 20 inch barrel 33 inches over all so i have room tho spare

Plumber, that is a handy looking little shotgun you put together.
I wouldn't mind having one of those myself.

Very nice!! I have my Grandfathers single shot 12 Ga. It was a beast to shoot when I was younger and I bet its still a beast :)

Great reminder a good old single shot will get the job done back then and now as well

I just got a rossi matched pair in .410 an . 22 LR....The .410 has a mod choke.. so I/m expecting I might be able to sneak another 5 yards of effectiveness out of it..

I have a single shot 12g stevens, I was thinking of shortening the barrel a bit and making it into a handy camp gun. I have recently acquired a taste for single shots.
