154 Cm

154cm is very good. I have it in some knives (I particularly like it in the MOD 875). It is nowhere near the most expensive steel though. vg 10 and s30v knives often cost a lot more. I have knives in n690 cobalt and A2 which are also very good. One of my favourites though is the new tech bowie from SOG which only uses aus 8 (a massive slab of it though). It cost about 1/3 of my MOD Mark V in A2 steel but I highly rate it.

Welcome to the forums Meshmdz. First, you can do alot worse than 154CM and the BM knives. From my perspective it's a great general utility steel for EDC. It's easy to sharpen and maintain. Takes a killer edge and holds it well. Like all the premium steels it won't let you down if you don't let it get dull. You won't regret doing your homework here. If you don't already have one, consider getting a good sharpening system like the Spyderco Sharpmaker when you get you purchase your knife, it's money well spent regardless of your knife choice. Good luck and enjoy the addiction!

native - thanks pal. i appreciate the warmth. however, i see that i have more posts than you (not that it means a thing) and its cool to be welcomed by someone who hasnt been as active as you have... i know you probaly browse and just dont get the mic as much as you could, metaphorically speaking. great info in your post man!!! thanks a bunch. whenever i figure out how to sharpen my blades, i will get one.. i have no clue on how to sharpen my blade. i will research it more here in a while. i am trying to get my arsenal of blades built up first. right now i have about 6; bm's and spydercos. spydercos being my all time favorites!!! gah i love the spyders!!!! and i cant wait to get my spyderco karambit and yojimbo!!!! woooo

Well hey Mesh,

First Spyderco made things sharp, then they made sharp things.

Get thier Sharpmaker man, you will not regret it,and you will be tooting about how much you love using it, and actually be able to sharpen your knives to scary sharp.

Scarp sharp= hair leaves arm before knive leaves sharpener, i mean the hair falls off in fear.
hehe

Usually scary sharp is cutting the tops of hairs off of your arm or what have you.

Or them carzy buggers that can slice through a womans silk scarf free falling or cutting free hangin TPaper, i can damn near do the last one with a couple of mine.

Funny you mentioned that in this thread, as I do believe that A.G. Russell uses none other than 154CM for the premium Scout knives he sells. I think the old standby, 1095, or a variation thereof, is still used on most "Scout Knives."

Best wishes,

Sadly, no. :( Stainless has been the BSA standard since the 70s, and a mere 420HC at that. My old one is a great knife, and I keep looking for the Ulster from about ten years earlier- same knife in carbon.

thanks guys, i cant wait to learn how to sharpern my knives. but as i states above, i am in the process of building my blade arsenal first. my next addition will be the spyderco karambit and then the spyderco yojimbo. i am in love with spyderco.
