New article on 154CM, this one was very interesting as I was able to solve a couple of mysteries I had always wondered about. And there were a couple misconceptions I had about other things related to its history and properties.

Why are 154CM and BG-42 so similar?
Does 154CM have superior properties to 440C?
Was 154CM designed for turbine blades?
What does the "CM" stand for?

Interesting read.
I had the impression that Hitachi had developed ATS-34 and then Crucible copied it as 154-CM. I see how early Crucible developed it now. Probably my misinterpretation was because Crucible didn't get the QC down on it until the 90's when we saw it show up as a knife steel. I had always thought the CM was Crucible Metallurgy, as in CPM.

Do you know the meaning of ATS from Hitachi. I would guess A??? T??(tool?) Steel, as in YSS = Yasugi Specialty Steel.

Thank you Larrin for yet another well written and supported article. Very informative. Wish I could remember all this stuff.

Why do you think I'm writing it down? Now I have a record of all the things I've forgotten.

Larrin thanks a lot! a lot of tecnical informations in a lot of history. I also knew that the ATS34 had been done before 154CM.

A fairly comprehensive study was done on the 14-4 family of steels, and 440C, 52100. in the early 60s by

Yeah I tried to get it but Climax Molybdenum said it wasn’t in their archives and the Interlibrary loan service told me it would be $50 through the British library.

Hmmm, I posted this yesterday at 11AM????? Don't know why it just showed up????

I just got off the phone with Tom Bell of Hitachi America.

ATS-34 is Aichi Tool Steel - 34. Aichi is the former name for Hitachi.

I also asked about getting the Hitachi #1 white and other steels in the USA. He said that I can order it in 2000 pound lots of one thickness.

If you feel that would benefit what you're doing Larrin I'll pay for it.
