I was working with 154cm on the week end and was wondering what is the best way to get the mill scale off. Sanding took forever.:barf:

You can soak overnight in white vinegar to loosen and remove some then just hit it on the belt grinder on the flats.

Hmmm...good point. I know on ATS-34 (basically same) when I just hit it with the belt grinder, but it eats the belts fast. I've soaked it and it seems to go a little easier on the belts...

You're forging 154CM ? Few people forge stainless .Please give us some info .HCl [muriatic acid] should work well. When using acids make sure to do it OUTSIDE otherwise all your tools will rust ! Avoid breathing fumes of HCl !

Robert,

I think he is just using flat stock with mill scale still on it.

If you have a contact wheel, try using that to remove the mill finish (should not be scale on 154CM). I took a fit and finish course from Bob Crowder and one of the things he demonstrated was how effective a curved surface (like a contact wheel) can perform on a flat surface (like a blank - or a flat). It sounds weird, but it works.

Rob!
