Hi guys.
What do you make of this knife, black delrin handles ,blank shield & tang stamped sc501.The sheath is black leather.

As you know, the 501SC was the scrimshaw designation. I am surprised to see that this one is not stainless. Perhaps none of the 501's were stainless, but most scrimshaws were indeed SCHRADE+ steel. The black handle with blank shield is exactly what we see in a number of issues sold to Sears Craftsman. I think it is possible that this one was put together out of leftover parts for the bankruptcy sale. Do you know what leftovers are called after the third day? Leftafters. Oops... sorry.

According to the Scrim Chart found here: http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/scrims/pages/scrimcharts.htm the 501SC pattern was offered in 1979 only.

When you read the descriptions you will see that the 1979 offerings were a mix of stainless and carbon knives depending on pattern. The 501SC was carbon.

As far as the handles and shield goes I think tongueriver is likely on the right path.
