I thought it was impossible too on anything deep hardening enough to be air hardening, but there is apparently a maker who did it with A2 some time ago.
I would imagine you would need very thick clay to act as a heat sink. But I really don't know.

I don't believe this was made by clay hardening like we do on carbon steel. The pearlite nose of 440C is far to wide for any amount of clay to do the work. This is to be some kind of trick but I'm sure people with much experience with stainless like DevinT or Larrin might could answer this.
