I have some .065 15n20 , it's the thinnest stock I have. I have been wanting to make a fillet knife for a buddy to use to test.

I have a pretty decent factory made fillet knife I was going to use a pattern.

I was thinking of doing a differential heat treat as well.

So what say you, 15n20 differential ht fillet knife? Yes/ no, what final thickness should i shoot for? I'm thinking factory knives may be thicker than ideal altough i haven't checked mine to see what the thickness is.

I was thinking the differential ht might help with flex but I don't plan on developing a hamon so would it be a benifit or not?

No need to differential heat treat it. Flex is based on geometry, not heat treat. 0.050" is a good place to start.

I was planning to do a full flat grind, should the spine be a bit thicker or is .050 thick enough?

I've done paring knives in 0.065" and they aren't super flexy. I'd go thinner. I'm spheroidizing some 15n20 right now for skiving knives, a similar application, and I'll be thinning them to 0.040-0.050".

If it's a longer knife, you could start a bit thicker and do a full distal taper.

Thanks

Planning on a 6 inch blade with a slight taper, so I'm going to shoot for .050 at the ricasso. I looked at a couple I have and they are about that but no flat grind so I think that will have plenty of flex.

15n20 is EXCELLENT for fillet knives. It's crazy tough so no need to do a differential heat treat.

I just stocked up on steel, only got 2 bars of 15n20 because I was ordering other stuff.

When that's gone I would like to get some from you if your still selling it.

What's the price for a box or half box? With shipping prices what they are I will probably get a full box.

I have my fillet knife in 15n20 done months ago. Its tough and hold an edge better than 5160.

I just ship in large flat rate boxes, a full box normally weighs just under 70lbs. If you can get me your email I can send you prices. JTcustomKnives(at)gmail.com
