I have read that 15n20 is used on most commercial band saw blades, so I may have access to a few. I had a few questions about it.

How fast does it rust compared to carbon steels?

As it comes in thin strips, can you hammer it in a forge to make it thicker easily?

What's the usual cost of it per pound?

(also, where can I find a daily price on different steels?)

Not all bands are 15n20. 6" wide and larger usually are though.

I got a bunch of 1.5" bands from a portable bandsaw mill years ago and it wasn't 15n20.

Don't know of a place to find daily steel prices.

I would not think it would be easy to upset its thickness as its thin. check out admrial steel and look at there catalog. i dont know about rust but i would guess its maybe just a little tad bit better then 1075.

15N20 holds up pretty well as far as carbon steels go. In my experience it will not rust quickly while sitting in the shop or with things like finger prints when there is a fine finish on it. It'll still stain, but O1 and 10xx series steels will rust within a day or two of sitting in my shop, 15N20 will take months.

What Don said.

I believe that most of the smaller width stuff in bi-metal. I had some analyzed at the met department where I work (just the back side). The blade is European made by Sandvik, my blade is 1 1/4" X.042" (I've got about 100 lbs of it) the metal specs are C=0.5131, Mn=0.8184, P=0.0089, S=0.0019, Si=0.2317, Ni=0.5313, Cr=0.9737, Mo=0.9333, V=0.1229, Al=0.0730. I use this in pattern welding normally with pallet strap which I also had analyzed and it turned out to be 1046. When I water quench I get an average Rc C after tempering of 59.5.

I really don't believe you would have good results trying to upset (thicken) steel this thin and it will just fold over on you (I've tried). You would be better off forge welding 5 to 11 pieces together, hell you may as well throw in a few pieces of pallet strap :D and get a nice pattern.
