15n20 spring

I have never spring tempered 15n20 but I have heat treated a bunch of it. Spring hardness should be in the 48-50RC and so I'm guessing that's going to put you in the range of a 700°-800° temper. But like I said I have never taken 15n20 that low. If you want I can do alittle experimenting next time I fire up the heat treat oven.

Thanks. I don't have a hardness tester but I do have an accurate oven. According to the chart on AKS, to get into the RC50range I'm going to have to be close to 800°f. I'l play with some scrap pieces this weekend.

I've used 15n20 in about 10-12 slip joints as blade and spring. I always just throw them in the oven with the blades when tempering. After that, I use a soft flame on a propane torch and heat it until it turns blue, twice. Not sure what hardness that resulted in but worked great. I do mostly stainless now and temper in the kiln.

This is how I do slip joint springs, works great! Rc usually in the low 50s'.

I have not done much tempering with a flame, I am going to heat treat several spring sized pieces along with the blade and experiment.

Do you have a heat treat oven? If so I can run a few test tempers and RC test them for you.

Yes I have a heat treating oven but if you are interested in experimenting, I would certainly like to know what you find.

Not a problem, next time I'm in the shop I will fire up the oven and see what temper range will get you the 48-50RC. This is dependent on the as quenched hardness to a point. Mine is a solid 66-66.5RC but I did a good bit of temp testing with my oven and 15N20
