Yesterday I called Aldo and he missed my call, today I worked late and forgot to call.....

But anyways, I was wondering if Aldos 15N20 comes annealed? I really like this steel but, I don't have the right equipment to anneal every blade I make.

No. As-shipped is around 95% soft, 5% hard spots. Just do a quick sub-critical anneal before blanking...

Hm. Ok. Thats not bad I guess. For a proper anneal, how is it cooled? I did a thin piece of .06 for a folder blade and it seemed to work well when I heated and let cool right in the forge.

Air cool should works - very little transformation taken place from sub-critical to ambient temperature. While spheroidized annealing is much more time consuming and precise cooling rate (usually slow to very slow - hrs for uber high alloy).

I know this is off the the topic, but since we are talking about 15n20, mite as well ask the question:
can we get a Hamon in 15N20 or is it to much alloyed to do so?

IIRC, there is some 15n20 that Aldo has that is around 42HRC, as it was slated for bandsaw production. But that was only in certain thicknesses, and I think the .069" stuff was 42HRC. Also, IIRC, Aldo mentioned that the Mn count was super low for this 15n20, so hamon formation should be pretty good.

I use his 15n20 on all my knives .130 and thinner and never had a problem drilling or grinding it. That said its been out of stock for quite some time . I have a couple chefs knives on hold till its back in stock.

Thanks Alot! I'll try my hand at it. I've got a knif in 15N20 I'm working on, should be redy in a couple of weeks, since i only work on it an hour or two during week nights.

Yea. Kind of a bummer theres no .130. I may just go with the .072. Make a few chef knives.

I said .069", but I think it is the .072" stock that was semi hard @ 42HRC. I know....I have a couple bars of it. The .0625 was fully annealed. Here it is......

"Gentlemen, The 15N20 you have all been using in Damascus is typically from coils of pre-hardened material(42Rc.) for the band saw industry. Some of our stock is from the same. Our 1/16 and 1/8 is rolled and annealed for us. As the other stock we have gets used up we will be replacing it with this annealed stock. It is much easier to work with if you want to make knives with it and it actually brings up a pretty nice Hamon as well." Aldo Bruno.

Thanks for the info, Stuart. I almost out of the old stock. Good to know, newer stocks are fully annealed. As an additional bonus, work-hardening won't be a problem for cold shaping.

Thats great to know! I may put off my order for a few weeks and maybe I'll get lucky with the new stuff.
