.16 gauge Shotgun, Pros and cons.

I used to whack ducks left and right with a 12 while my buddy had a 16. The ducks looked just as dead with his scatter gun as mine. Shells were a hassle to find sometimes though. There is always the reloading option if the shotgun has sentimental value.

I would keep it as a momento or relic. Sure get a few boxes of shells to satisfy any urge you might have. I grew up shooting 16 ga shotguns for small game. Never had a complaint. There is a reason why 16 ga shotguns are harder to find these days... the 3" 12 and 20 ga guns completely encompass any advantage that might be offered by a 16 ga. I tend to be a fan of the underdog calibers, but in this case, I just see no point any more with the 16 ga.

Thanks, Scotman. I'm going to order one to convert Dad's old H&R 16 to the 20g! Grandpa's is an old Winchester with a 30" full choke.

I have a 16 gauge. Birdshot may or may not be a hassle to find. So stock up when you find it, and you won't have to worry about it.

Buckshot and slugs are another story. Went on several epic drives looking for it, and most gun stores would look at you like you were a two headed kid, when asked for either one.

Go shoot it.

A 16ga doesn't have the full power potential of a 12 ga, but with an appropriate load a 16ga shotgun can handle some pretty big targets...If you trust #1,2, or even #4 for home defense then a 16ga will do the job just fine.

Good thoughts. Appreciate it.
