I got the coarsest belts I could find, 16 grit, thinking that it would speed up grinding. It looked like big black rocks glued onto the belt. Key word is looked. When I installed it and turned on the grinder, it spit all the rocks onto my face at high speed.

I was lucky I was wearing goggles.

Sorry im laughing but thats funny , im glad you had your goggles on . I have some blaze orange belts in 36 and 60 and they are really aggresive. I can profile the outline of any blade in under 3 min , I move to 60 grit really fast and then go to 120. Im now finding 60 is a little to coarse to hollow grind maybee a couple passes but man they remove material to fast.

i had a similar experience except mine was #1 grit. i made one pass on my steel and all that was left was what i was holding--ifeel ya ,man..--thanks-marekz

Another thing about super low grit belts is the amount of grinding necessary to remove the scratch lines they put in the steel. I tried some 36 grit belts and it took a while at 60 grit to remove the 36 grit scratches. Not worth it to me.
