I can't answer your question, just wanted to say the handle on my 171UH looks like that, and I don't recall ever seeing a different one. It will be interesting to see what people have to say. As usual with Schrade, you never know what you might see next!

i only slightly remember that and couldn't figure out how to search. thanks for the info.

While You SCHRADE 171 experts are gathered here, I'd like to pick your collective knowledge about one of these great knives.
I have what apparently looks to be the 171 pattern in a Ducks Unlimited Knife.

The thing is, it doesn't have the 171 nomenclature anywhere on the knife.
It says SCHRADE + LTD USA on the blade;

The serial number is 2839.
Anybody have any more info on this knife?
Thanks in advance for any additional information. :)

Hi guys,
What type of boxes & paper work came out with the 1990 to 1991 runs,is this knife a 1990 to 1991 run no: 74527,also noticed that the back edge of the blade is quite sharp, what was the reason for this.
chris

i have one also that the back side is sharp. i just assumed it was done by a previous owner. if not that would be an interested thing that Schrade did on the later knives.
the one box i have is long brown one with PRO HUNTER on it in gold lettering.

Chris, the "back edge of the blade" is called a false edge. On big knives like this it's handy to sharpen it and use that edge for chopping wood (limb trees, clear path etc.) or bone or for anything "heavy duty" that might dull your knife. This way you can keep the main edge pristine and razor sharp for finer work. It also increases the knifes ability to pierce.

I'm sure some folks here have found some ingenious uses for it that I have not mentioned. If so, I'd like to hear any more uses for the false edge as well.

Finally found some info on the DU 171UH.
Ordered in Feb 1997
The 1st 600 were delivered in March and 600 a week after that for a total 3000.
The guard should be hallmarked.
The Sheath is correct.

Thanks Irv, I appreciate your looking this up. :)
When you say the guard is hallmarked, what do you mean by this?

A hallmark is a special stamping that uses symbols to denote the maker of the knife, where and perhaps when it was made. It's the "mark of quality" sort of thing.

Starting in 1985 Schrade hallmarked some of their special edition knives, usually the fanciest ones. Here's a link. It shows Schrade's own explanation:

here is a photo showing a hallmark for a 13 DU.

Thanks Guys! :)
Here's a photo of the miniscule hallmark that I found on the hilt, just under the blade. This was under the cutting edge.
Hopefully you guys can decipher this one. This image had to be cropped and blown up before I could really make it out.

SC means Schrade Cutlery, hammer and anvil trade-mark means Ellenville and the "M" confirms 1997 made just as Larry stated previously.

"A" meant 1985 so you just have to count forward to "M".

Thanks Dave. 1997 at Ellenville, EH? :) Seven years before they closed.
Nice to finally know when it was made.

just a quick note the last hallmark used by Schrade would have been the letter X. as the note stated if they would have gotten to the end of the alphabet then they would have started over with A again but in a different shape. too bad they didn't.
so if any hallmarks so up with y and z we know they be Taylor. just my humble opinion and wouldn't put it past them either.

This is an interesting tidbit, thanks. :)
As an aside, I'm not a big fan of Taylor for the simple fact that "they" are the ones that sent our beloved SCHRADE name to China.
