Received my first khukuri from Uncle Bill yesterday. What a pleasure it was dealing with HI. I see by the postmark he actually sent it the same day I sent the check. I've read about a special trust amoung knife knuts that I now have experienced.
On to the details- 18'' Ang Khola. Actually measured 18.5'' from blade tip to furthest point on buttcap. 5/8'' thick and 2 3/8'' wide. This one must be a Whopper- 2lb.15oz. From what I had read I was expecting around 2lbs. even.
Beautiful blade with a full sun[Sher?] marking. I'm assuming the other marks are the HI . Prelimanary chopping reports are as expected-made minced meat out of smaller branches, felt like chopping up carrots.
I'll be going to the feed store today to get some of hoof treatment for the handles.Has one brand been found to be better than the others? It's drier than normal here in the Sonoran desert, haven't had a good rain since Sept. DaveAZ

Dave, you did indeed receive an AK made by Sher. He is still producing the heaviest blades in BirGorkha. I don't know if this is because he got stuck making 250 of the little kagas katnes or if this is just the way he likes to make them. But, no complaints about Sher's work so far.

Many thanks for report.

Khukuri FAQ

Dave: ---Tell us more ---is the handle thick around etc., and what is it made of?

------------------

Jay: The handle is horn, brass bolster is about 3/4'',horn is about 4 3/4'' with the buttcap and tang end adding about another 1/2''. It seems perfect to me- my middle finger just touches my palm when I hold it tight. I put a string around the handle 1'' from the bolster and it measured 4 1/2''.
The blade by itself is around 12 3/8''long.
Many wood chips in backyard, wife is just shaking her head. DaveAZ

DAYUM!!!!!
Almost 3 full pounds!!
That has too be an awesome 18" AK!!!
Mine is just a tad over 2 Lbs. and like you Dave that's what I figured that most of them ran.
The Tiger must still be working off his frustrations of makin them little knives.
That says an awful lot about his perseverance!!
I will bet that Uncle will take it back on a trade for a lighter one Dave, but I will also bet that there won't be any prying of it from your hands now. ainnit? (VBESEG)

I doubt there's any significance in the brands of hoof treatment unless one has more Lanolin than another.
My daughter with the horses says that any product with Lots of lanolin will work on the horses hoofs.

Khukuri FAQ

I think Sher is a dedicated advocate of the old kami saying, "thick blades don't break, thin ones do."

I watched him work and I was impressed with his ability. He has great concentration and never looks up to chat or gaze around when he's working. He keeps his attention right where it should be and it shows on the finished product.

Khukuri FAQ

FWIW, if you want to try a lanolin product on your handle and don't have a tack or farm store handy, A&D Ointment is petrolatum with 15.5% lanolin, and can be found in the drug dept. of almost any store. It's supposed to be for skin care, but it makes a fair case sizing lube in cartridge reloading, and might work as a horn handle dressing, too.
