Just taking a poll sort of................what do you prefer? I know that the 22.5" will win but how often do you need more room than an 18" oven has?

A 22.5" will require heating a bit more chamber... but I think that's about the only downfall.

On the upside, it will give you the ability IF IF IF you do need that extra length, as well as give you some room on each end of the chamber for air circulation.

Unless you're a chic in a baby-Tee... BIGGER is always better! :D

I chose the 22.5 inch because it has 20% more power as well as the extra length. The purchase price difference is only about $50 so that didn't enter into my decision.

To think I used to respect you!

BIGGER is always better, especially if your a chick in a baby - Tee!!:D

Brian - my vote is for the bigger one because thats what i bought last week.

i got the 18 i just dont figger on making monster knives and if i did they would most likely not fit even in a 22 inch kiln and would have to be sent out anyhow
as i told my friend when he said to get the 22 he thought he had knives in the house bigger then 18 inch (full size chefs knife) i bet him it was just 15 inches i was right hence i got the 18
seeing how the cost is not much different and you have made many more knives then me and larger ones at that the 22 might be more fitting
thats just my .02 and in todays world that dont buy much;)

even my largest knife would be 16" I'd think.....right now its about 14"

Too large and that knife is back in the truck when you need it...IMHO :)

Just get the bigger one Brian, you'll be glad you did. I like the added length because it lets me put more space between the back coils and the blade tip. But then again I placed shields in mine to protect from hot spots from the colis when the coils are reheating the chamber.

Brian, any steel should work, but my wife worked for a restraunt that did a remodel and threw out a small stainless counter top. I cut it just high enough to reflect the radiant heat from the coils, both sides and the back, top and front are all open. A piece of thin wall box tubing should work too, but I'd weld something across the back to protect the blade tips. The stainless lasts a lot longer too, but for just critical heats around 1500, plain carbon steels should last a long time too. Some say I'm crazy for doing this, but those coils have to put out higher heats to heat the chamber up until it gets to your desired setting, therefore heat spikes. I'd rather be safe then sorry, just my opinion.

Brian, I'm glad you brought this up. I'm looking at getting the 22.5.
I contacted Tim Zowada earlier this week about it, now I've got to scrape up the cash.

PAK - I have been thinking about one for a while.......I need to use other steel than 0-1 one of these days :)

I find that I use my Paragon oven for doing thermal cycles and spheroid anneals of my billets. I tend to forge 20-24 inch billets so I often fill the oven for thermal treatments. I usually do thermal cycles in my forge but a few more in the temp controlled kiln gives me confidence. For bandsawing loafs I weld them to a piece of strap 1/8 by 5 or 6 inches wide and do an anneal cycle to soften the welds. Only about a quarter of the time I'm using the kiln for hardening. I use the kiln for non martinsitic stuff like precipitation harding of Titanium and other non-ferrous stuff...Take Care...Ed

I'm making machetes too so I went with a custom evenheat 27" :)

as you go messing with different steels so will you with longer blades in time.
try not to limit yourself because of $50.00-$100.00 the one long one you sell later would have paid the difference right? :)

What a nice company Evenheat is! Mine is about 3 years old and that version was unable to store programs. I called them, gave them the chip number, and mine is able to be upgraded to the current chip! Now I won't have to program it every run, which makes the SetPro MUCH more attractive. I'd still love the RampmasterII, but it would be a tough upgrade for a lot of $$.

The real kicker is that they're sending me the new chip free of charge!

Way to go, Evenheat! Thanks!
