:
I swiped this out of the archives from one of Uncle Bill's posts.
This was the 1st pic of the Salyan.
And here is the URL for the complete thread.

Here is the 18 inch Salyan. It is really about 20 inches in length. 2 & 15/16 wide (we asked for 3). Almost 5/8 inch thick and weighs about 3.5 lbs. I view this as nearly a 20 inch AK but without the spine.

This is not exactly what I had in mind but I realize that I put two constraints on the manufacture of this knife which made it come out as it has. One, I specified a Salyan style with a width of 3 inches. The kamis used information from photos and dimensional sketches they had on file of our logo Salyan khukuri and tried to scale these up. Shop 1 is a far piece from Salyan and there are no kamis from Salyan so they used what they had. They determined that an 18 incher 3 inches wide simply could not be made to Salyan specs so upped this to 20 and they said this was still not enough. My 7/16 thickness did not match a scaled thickness so they scaled it up as required.

The result is what we have here. My mistake was making them stick to a strict Salyan design (notice the Salyan cho). Next time I will know better.

Anyway here it is if anybody still wants one email me. I know Cliff has one on order and he will love this knife but not everybody is a yeti.

The 12 inch Sirupati at top is for comparison purposes.

BTW: the handle is significantly larger than a D-cell Kel-lite ( maglite ).

Jaeger, I've been gone a few days. Do you still have it? If so can you tell me exactly what kind of shape it's in? Any nicks,deep/shallow scratches, handel cracks, loose but cap etc. If it looks like that picture, I like it! let me know!

I still have it. The blade has some very feint tarnishing marks, scuffs and some very light scratches. If you've chopped wood with your khuks you know what I'm talking about. There is no damage to the knife. I think a few minutes with a buffing wheel would bring it back to better than new cosmetic condition. I has been used but not abused. On the left side of the handle, just under the bolster there is what looks like what could be the beginning o a crack. It is very tiny. It could develope into something larger but I doubt it. I've tried to keep the blade and the handle well oiled. The buttcap is tight. The sheith is perfect except for some tarnish to the brass ferrule. The karda and chakma have barely been used. I just noticed a spot of ust on the chakma which I will polish off. The rig is in fine shape and should give many lifetimes of service.

Jaeger, Do you know what kami made the knife? How long have you had the knife/how old is it? If you know how to test for hardness in the blade what did you come up with. Sorry for all the questions!!

I've had it since the summer of '99. It replaced the BAS that had a tang failure.
I don't know who made it but it was made at the old Shop 1, the same folks who made my very favorite khuk, my 15" Ang Kohla. I have no way of measuring the hardness but judging from it's edge retention and how it sharpens I'd guess around 58Rc.
I'd like to stick with $175. 2 Weeks is fine. You are the only person who is willing to take on the challenge of this beast of a blade! Just let me know when you are ready.

Couple more questions. How many times has the blade been sharpend? And is the tip blunted at all? Thanks!

I do't think I've sharpened it more than 2 or 3 times. The original profile is pretty much intact. The tip is not blunted at all.

Give me a holler when you're ready!

I got the opportunity to use a polishing wheel last night. I gave the Salyan a touch or two and I must say, she's lookin' pretty fine! I think you'll be pleased.

Yes, I think I will like this blade. I'll know this Thursday if I have enough cash. I think shipping will be something like 8 to 15 dollars bringing the price to something like $190.00ish. Talk to you soon.
