Will a new bg-42 buck 110 blade fit into a 186 frame easily without modifications?I already have the blade, been looking for a 186 to set up to my liking, what does everyone think?Anyone know where i can get a 186 ?thanks:thumbup:

Yes I agree with JB . No problems . There were two 560 gold frames at the last show I displayed at in Las Cruces this past weekend and he didn't want that much for them . DM

About how much are 186s going for. I know they're kind of rare.

We are talking the 186 TI's that come apart via screws. Those go for $100 to 200 depending on the condition and if all parts, box, and papers are together. Your mileage may vary due to location or high/low demand;).

Does anybody know what the original retail price was for a Buck 186 when they first came out? I'm just curious to see how it relates to the current prices being asked. I was in college when the 186 came out and all I remember is that it was way beyond my reach at that time.

The 560's came out in 1988, so the 186 must have been in 86 or 87 . They were only mfg. for one year because customers kept losing the parts . Thus, the model became an Albatross for Buck to keep replacing parts . As to the cost I don't remember but the 560's suggested retail price was 74-87$ depending on which model as they had different titanium in 1996 . I bought one in 2004 and paid over 100$ for it . DM

The price list from '87 for the 186 says "dealer price" $53.90. I assume that means that was the cost to the dealer. It doesn't give a suggested retail price that I can find.

If it cost the dealer $53 my guess is it was probably around $100 retail. Thanks for looking it up, Plumber.

It's still in the '88 catalog and the price stayed the same in the price list. 1990's price list was the first to show both the dealer cost and suggested retail price. You could figure just about double dealer cost.

The reason the 186 was discontinued is that the rocker pivot screw was shrouded by the tip of the belt clip. People who took them apart couldn't get them back together. They sent them to Buck for reassembly. The easy solution is to put the clip on backwards to align all four screws. Unk the rocker pivot, then reverse the clip. Not only will a BG-42 blade work on the 186, but all of the selector blades will fit in the Ti handle. I even have some custom and premium blades that fit in the 186.

Thanks for the info guys,i'll keep my eyes out for a 186,I just gotta have one for my collection!

I don't follow...what do you mean by "putting the clip on backwards"? Do you mean put the clip on the opposite side?
Also, what is "unk" Is that a typo or a word I'm unfamiliar with. I'd really like to understand this.

I was lucky enough to p/u a very good condition used Buck 186, came with the attached tool and pocket clip only, for $60 @ a pawn shop in Medford, Oregon last summer. Quite a knife. It brought me here, to this forum, with a will.

I see them on the popular auction site regularly.

When you put the clip on backwards, it points in the opposite direction of the blade (hangs off the back end of the knife). When you unk a screw, you close your eyes and carefully apply the proper torque. On reassembling the knife, you want all four screws finger tight. The rocker pivot screw is the first screw you unk (do the final tightening on). The screws that hold the clip must be removed in order to put the clip back in its normal position. The the clip screws can be unked. Sorry for the confusion.

I think he means, put the 'belt clip' on backwards ... then unlock the rocker pivot and reverse the clip and put it back on . Maybe ? As this was Buck's first model with a belt clip . Tig, I was at the Buck plant when management was discussing this model and why it was discontinued . But what the heck, it doesn't matter to me . DM

A few pics of my pawn shop find, still has the factory edge, for your amusement:

Tig: Nothing to be sorry for. I appreciate your going over the steps again for me.
