1911

Personally, I enjoy buying a good base model and customizing it myself the way I like it.

Lots of good advice but to have a truly unique gun who can't go past the above suggestion.

It's a whole lot of fun too picking and choosing the bits and pieces and finish that will make it your family gun.

Just be certain to fine a reputable gunsmith for any work which may be needed as there are lots who claim to be 'smiths but are hobbyists at best or worse, 'butchers.' :grumpy:

I have been alternately carrying a P12 and P14 since the early 90s when they were still a fairly new item. I have not had any problem with them except the occasional stovepipe or ftf which has usually been from the ammo. I did customize the P12, dropped in an Ed Brown guide rod, 22 or 23 lb spring, titanium firing pin and changed out the link. Made it tighter, faster and more accurate. The P14 has never given me any problems at all. These are both older models. I can imagine that the newer ones are even better.

plus 1 on taking a very hard look at Dan Wesson especially the pointman and Valor models. Personally I might buy two Taurus 1911s and spend the rest of that 2 grand on ammo and holsters. The taurus guns have gotten exceptional write-ups everywhere and come "loaded" from the factory, ambi safeties, Hiene Sights, lowered and flaired ejection ports etc.
I totally understand wanting to personalize a handgun but the idea of having to work on a new gun just to make it function correctly is silly IMO.

have fun

No I don't want to have to work on a new gun to make it function correctly.
If you buy a quality pistol to start with it shouldn't be an issue.
However, even some higher end pistols have defect. If its a Glock or 1911 I can fix it myself, unless it was a serious machining error from the factory.

I have no experience with Baers but I've heard they are so tightly fitted that they can run funny when they get dirty.
Funny as in how? Funny like 7500rds of WWB on a brand new gun, was never taken apart, just had a few drops of Wilson oil on the slide and barrel hood and it still went bang every time? Funny like it now has in excess of 65,000rds on all the original parts (except three recoil springs- replaced at 20k each time)? Or a maybe some other kind of funny?

Thunder Ranch Special I bought new in 2003 for $1399, now owned by a buddy that EDCs it and shoots the heck out of it.

Sounds like my Para, shoot the heck out of it and it always goes bang when you need it to.

Honestly with the exception of a CZ-75 there isn't another type of handgun that I would trust my life to (a 1911).

my favorite 1911 is a kimber custom shop commander (i cant think of what they call it right now, brain freeze lol, its not an ultra carry) which i got a few yrs back for ~$1K and its been a really good one, very accurate and reliable, never ever a malfunction, i have heard the last yr or so kimber has had some QC issues though.

a bud has a wilson and its also a good one, outta be it was 2X what my kimber was.

my neighbor got a colt, just a std 1911 a couple yrs ago and its also been a very good pistol.
