I think you just dated yourself. My guess is that a sizeable percentage of forumites not only were never on a party line, they never heard of a party line (in reference to something other than politics). Maybe a 90's way to phrase it is "You never picked up somebody's wireless call on your scanner, did you?".

Hey, I grew up in an urban area, but spent summers on a farm where they had a party line.

What really dates me, is while my wife and I and another married couple ( her best friend met my best friend )were having dinner out it came out in conversation that my wife was the only one of the four who couldn't drive a stick shift. AND she was the only one of us who had NOT learned to drive on a farm tractor ( or learned to use the 22 to protect the crops from damage ). For the record I have 9 months left of my 40's.

Mohd, I think this is part of western male culture to hide feelings under jokes. We don't tell other men we love and cherish them, when in fact we do. So we hide it under teasing.

I want to ask Pala and you some things later about asian culture because the western world has changed so rapidly we seem to have thrown the "baby out with the bathwater".
Family obligations are one such thing we were eager to be free from, and rightly so with all the abuse of power by the elders for their own purposes, but I also see us losing the goos as well.
