I just wanted to share a pic of my latest find, a 1961 103 with original sheath, pretty good shape, aside from some pitting on the pommel.

Sweet, thats a great looking skinner, gotta love those old ones, they just have a history that no new knife can touch.congrates!

Scott, that's a great find. It's in really good shape:D.

It looks as though the pommel is more square than the later ones. Is this a a fact or photo irregularity??? Preston

wowe what a score!
Dont let Joe see it or he will try to trade you out if it!!!
hummm but then he may make it worth your wild!!

Nice knife. Too bad about the pits though. I recomend sending the knife in to my attention and I will replace it for you. For free!

Actually it looks like that is the very first version of production 103 and heres some trivia that will blow your mind. It is actually a model 110 skinner! WoW HUH?
The model number of the skinner was 110 in the early 60's. They changed it to 103 just before the Folding Hunter came out. I wish i knew why.
Your knife should have leather handle spacers, a hold over from the hand made versions. Also, if you look at the back of your sheath, you should be able to see a stich going from one side to the other, at about the spot where the blade "pouch" is on the other side.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, what's up with Buck and your numbering scheme? It's like the 182, 111, and others.

If you just use three digits you can go up to "999".

And, I have heard, that there are numbers that even have four digits (must be that new asian math - I can say that as I am half asian and half norweigian - ok, maybe it's the new viking math - there, now I'm "PC"...maybe  )

Welcome back Joe.

Goose - you spelled "assed" wrong... :D :p ;)

No, that combo with my thought process makes me that 100% in personality. :D :D :D :D
That's an aquired trait, something that can't be genetic (Japanese/Norweigian - very even keeled and peaceful gene pool - samurai-viking) .

Thanks for the confirmation Joe, leather spacers and stitching across the back. I thought I'd throw in a few pics of a 1967 1 line that just arrived, beside the 1961 "110":) The '67 is shorter and narrower with a smaller finger guard.

My grandfather just gave me his 103...it looks to be a 1961 as well..very good condition but dull. Should I get it sharpened?

No, don't use it. If you want one to use get a newer 103. A great, early model to have. Just me. DM

Scott, Great find... Don't worry about the pitting, I think it gives the old knives character. The aluminum they used back then wasn't the greatest quality and allot of the knives of the early 60s had porosity. The spacers on that knife are in excellent condition, for being 61 years old...

Hi bpayne, welcome to the Buck forum!
I'm gonna agree with Mr Martin... if you gotta ask, then you probably shouldn't use it. I would put it up as a cherished momento if it were my Grandfathers knife...

Fellows,

Mr. Payne has discovered the Buck forum here, after receiving knife info. over on the AAPK forum. (by David via me) He found this thread on his own.
He as been assured he has a rare knife. Welcome him as one who has tried to find out the details on a old Buck knife. He provided some decent id photos over on the other forum.

Welcome Payne. After giving your Grandfather a big hug, keep the knife out and admire it a few days. There are other photos of 103's here that you can compare it to. DM

Thanks everyone, and yes I apologize for resurrecting a 6 year old thread. I would of posted here first, but I kept being accused of being a spammer when I tried to register. Im tempted not to use it as suggested, but the knife has a great weight to it and even dull is fun to use. I'll probably find a replacement. Thx for the advise.
