so awhile back when my boy needed a car to learn to drive on, I bought him a wrecked 1969 vw bug with the hopes that a car project would get him away from the video games for a bit. that was probably the best $1000 I ever spent on his education. the front end was wrecked pretty bad, and we had to remove the front beam, cut off the frame head and weld on a new one and rebuild the whole thing. i kept the torsion bars thinking that one day when I got better at pocket knives that they would make a cool knife and story. well i finally got around to it, and here is one of the first of them. the first one I made in blue g-10 to match the bug I have now, and dont tell my boy, but i'll end up making him a couple to match the original bug, plus the 2 others he has bought since.
if you had a bug or have one now that you would like one of these in a color to match it just let me know and ill see what I can do.
this one is simple yet oh so handy and pocket friendly. linerless to cut down on weight and thickness, yet plenty strong enough for daily tasks such as opening mail, trimming fingernails, peeling an apple, opening dog food bags, cutting cardboard, ect....
OAL open- 6 1/2" 3 5/8" closed
blade- 2 3/4" long tip to scales, .093" thick at the spine, .048" measured 1/4" behind the edge, and .008" thick at the shoulder of the edge. 9/16" wide
steel- torsion bar from a 1969 vw bug. it retains the original heat treat and has so far been a surprisingly good performing blade that takes and holds a good edge and yet is easy to resharpen! file checking this old german spring steel shows 61 ish. broken samples show very nice grain and took several 90 degree bends to cause the steel to tear in half. the first of these pocketknives i made did very well for the couple months that I carried it.
grind- a full flat grind, sharpened on a DMT 325 diamond hone with micro bevels, to an aggressive razor edge
finish- 400 grit handsanded finish
handle- black canvas micarta, linerless with a stainless shadow pivot
weight - 1.30 ounces
half stop
milled inside the scales so the blade doesnt get scratched
tip is pretty centered, flush in all 3 positions, nice walk and talk, opens a hair harder than a victorinox tinker large blade, and still comfortable with the thumbnail
$215 shipped in the us I can accept paypal Joe357m@bresnan.net or money order. There are a couple others on my website, and can be purchased there at https://caltoncutlery.com international friends please email me for a quote for usps shipping.
