1987 Sports Afield 100th Anniversary (real) Scrimshaw #86 of 100

Dave, I haven't had any luck tracking down that scrimshander. A couple of the guys remember working on the knives, especially the filet since it was unusual, (and difficult), fitting it in bone. They were finished plain, and no one recalls seeing the scrims, which leads me to believe that the work was done off premises and then sent directly to SA.

Thanks for checking Eric! The fillet is indeed unusual if not unique in it's design. I haven't seen another Schrade like it in any kind of handle material. Can anyone else point to another similar SFO?

My impression of this SFO from Sports Afield is that they were fully calling the shots. I don't think they just asked the knife makers to "come up with something nice". They had a plan. Schrade finishing them plain certainly fits with the scrims being done by an independent scrimshander (likely chosen by Sports Afield as well?).

I am going to follow Codger's suggestion next and send those initials to active scrimshanders (L. Karst Stone etc) to see if anyone recognizes them and will post any info I get back.

Would you mind expanding on why it was difficult to fit the bone handles? Any and all minutiae appreciated lol

Cheers!
