1995 and 2005 BAS Comparison

If you go blind, sue the Internet. All those years of Swedish emission studies and we're all going to go blind from looking at the screen anyway.

Munk,

Again, it was and is "just my opinion" >>> Jimmy J

Well heck; I didn't think you were speaking for Alfred E Newman.

That buttcap has re-emerged, so it looks like a shopper could find just about anything they wanted from HI.

btw, everyone, including the dog at the auto shop down the street, has wished the Kamis would write in their own language and drop the english script for blade markings. I'll admit it's charming. But I'd still like to see their own language. All that stuff though, the initials, the UB for Bill, the Kamis signs; pretty neat.

I definitely appreciate the overall idea of the Kami's putting in their markings (as in an artist signing his or her work). It's more of the lack of graceful looks that these markings have that I would say would be better off served if they were somewhat revamped (adding in that bit of graceful flair).

The HI company marking on their blades look as neat as all get out, imo :)

As for the U.B. markings, they look a little bit too crude for my tastes. Even so, the idea of it being placed on the blade is a sound one, and very well respected (honoring a/the major person behind the company, and a man loved by many while in life and after death).
The only thing is, imo, the crudeness factor comes into play again (as with the current kami marks).

As far as the markings being in their own language, keeping most of it as is makes about as much sense as anything else.

The HI company manufacturing and product are based in Nepal, so keeping the HI company marking in their own language sort of makes a lot of sense.

The Kami's are Neplalese, so their markings also make sense being in their own language.

As for the U.B. initials,....... Bill seemed to care very much about his fellow man, with a special place in his heart for the Nepalese people. Even so, he was an American, so his initials being left in the English language also make a lot of good sense.

Replacing the current U.B. initials with U.B. initials done in an elegant English script can be as beautiful as any other form, it will simply need a touch of grace :)

Again, just my opinion ;)

I'm going to note that the older style of buttcap had physical weaknesses as documented by Yvsa and others.

munk

You're right munk. It wasn't so much of a physical weakness but that the couldn't be modified without ruining them.
They would dig into your hand something fierce and there was no rounding them off.:grumpy:
I'd personally really like to see a solid 1/8" thick butt cap for several reasons. A solid 1/8" butt cap could be file worked if a person should choose to and it would be much less apt to bend. :D

I'll have to agree with Yvsa. If the Kamis used 0.125" brass stock for the buttcap it would be much tougher and very pretty too.

I picked up a 1995 BAS from the Exchange and it arrived today. It's really nice. There is a big difference from my nice little Kumar BAS from this year. It's unmarked near the cho (not even a kami mark) and has a very small traditional bolster.

The spine is a little less than a half inch thick, compared to a little less than 5/16" on the newer blade and the length is 16" as opposed to the 15 1/4" of the newer one. There is a simple single line in place of the complicated, inlaid Sword of Shiva and the blade geometry is a lot different, particularly in how the blade tapers from the spine to the edge. The handle is very tapered and has a scrolled end cap.

The pics show it better than I can describe it...

I just love that Pachthar. THose were a nice set (I really like the one I got), but you definitely got the coolest there.

The pachthar doesn't quite tickle me, but those scabbards sure do. Finishing one up real nice would be a treat for the eyes. :)
