Asking Santa for an FN/Fal never gets any respect. My wife always wants to buy me a 'Real' gift. I tried that one year and hated it. I don't remember even what it was. Oh, it was sensible. Probably wore well, or toasted something.
There's this assumption that Khukuri stuff, a few M1A's here, a .41 mag there; it will all pass. Really, they wonder, when will ______ ______ get over it and return to the real world? When will he grow up? When will he get something usefull?
I can't return, can't come back. We may never save the world with a Khukuri or properly crafted handload for a 38/55, but these things keep us sane, even cheerful.
Naturally, if we ever save someone's ass with these things we'll get thanked properly, right? They'll buy us a new toaster, the one with the dual ports, their way of saying, 'we love you."
My wife has come to understand this better in recent months, what with her amazng gift to me of the Movie Model last summer and the expiration of her "no new" firearms ban. Yes Rusty, you can bet I bought her the Rose bush you suggested. Planted, watered, fenced, and fertilized.
