Would a 1hp motor on a variable speed 2x72 be adequate for most grinding applications? i wouldn't be doing much profiling, just bevels, handles, and stuff. I know the Grizzly 2x72 has a 1hp motor and tons of people use that. I'm using a 1x30 with a less than 1/3 hp motor right now so any upgrade will be amazing. :P

Why are you thinking of a 1hp instead of 1.5 or 2? The price difference between a 1 and 2 hp motor is very small and worth the money in my opinion. The problem I see is that you can get a cheaper VFD to run the 1 hp compared to the 2 hp. If you can, get the larger motor.

1HP is the minimum that works well on a grinder. It will do the work, but may stall or kick out the VFD if you lean in hard when hogging a bevel.
1.5 or 2HP is all most anyone will ever need.

The main advantage of 1HP is that it will run on 120VAC and a lower cost VFD. That is a pretty big advantage in many hobby situations.

My grinder runs at 1HP with a KBAC variable speed until I can upgrade to 240V (unfortunately, not an option at the moment for me). When grinding with a contact wheel, it's generally not an issue. However, when flat grinding, especially at lower speeds, I can stall it out fairly easily.

If you're able to get a more powerful motor, do it. I would if I could.
