I just received a Canal Street Cutlery 3 3/4" single blade half moon trapper and I must confess to being a bit underwhelmed. Overall, it's a lovely knife. The fit and finish is excellent. The smooth sunset bone handle is perfectly finished and the mating of scales to bolster perfect.

However, it has almost zero walk and talk. When opening, it is smooth but never truly snaps into the open position. When closing, it has an anemic snap at the last few degrees of the closure arc. And, to my hand, it seems light. I'm now accustomed to my GEC 48 so this feeling of being light weight may be skewed because I'm so familiar with the 48. When closed, the blade is not perfectly centered, but can be moved to sit there. I don't like that. And finally, it wasn't very sharp out of the box. I know that's easily fixed, but it still doesn't sit well with me.

A lovely looking knife, but it just doesn't have the feel I want. Ah well, I'm glad I tried it and it will make a nice gift for my father.

Have to say I agree about Canal Street. However, be nice and give your father a GEC - I did.

I find that when I show non knife knuts my knives, they tend to like the canal street the best exactly for the reason that the pull is not too strong. I like Canal Street, yes they don't have quite te snap of a GEC, but honestly I don't need an alligator snap everytime I open my pocket knife. I think Carl had a post about Mr. Van and his opinion of knives with strong snaps. The spring just has to keep the blade from opening in your pocket.

I'm still considering the exact knife you have, haven't pulled the trigger yet, perhaps if it comes up on the secondary market I might go for it.
