1st case knife

It really all comes down to who you are and what you do?

I love the peanut. It's a fine little knife, gets lost in a pocket, but can do 98% of what you need from a small pocket knife. Before I went down to a peanut, I carried a Buck 303 cadet for several years. Before that, a Buck 301 stockman. My progression was a steady downsizing because as I got older, I grew to hate having a heavy/bulky object in my pocket. My old man carried a peanut for decades.

But…and here's the rub, it was easy to do from a standpoint of who we were and were we lived. East coast semi-city folks. The rigorous outdoor activities the peanut was used for was fishing, maybe cutting up some sandwich materials on a river bank, opening the FEDEX or UPS boxes left on the front porch, cutting jute twine for the tomato and other plants the better half loves to grow out back. Sometimes opening one of those accursed plastic blister packages.

The only reason I stopped carrying my beloved peanut was age. I'm 73 years old and have some ostio-arthritis and the peanut became too much to deal with. Same thing happened to my old man, he couldn't deal with his peanut the last ten years of his life. So, not a problem until you get the far side of 70! :thumb up:

On the plus side, the thin blades of the peanut got like pocket scalpels, and it was a great slicer. Looked great as well, and even in downtown Washington D.C. it didn't raise any alarms but even got positive comments. It got into federal buildings where the knife restrictions were a 2 inch blade. They never bothered to measure the peanut, just waved it through.

A yellow peanut with CV blades that will show a good contrasting patina is a great example of a classic slip joint pocket knife. But…like I said, it all depends on who you are, where you live, and what you will be doing with it. If you're a suburban type and need just a general duty small pocket knife, the peanut is great. If you're a rancher out on the range bull dogging those steers, you may want something a bit bigger.

But be very careful, if you try a peanut, they can be very addictive. And if you take possession of a 'nut, you may be enlisted into The Cult.

The Case Medium Jack (87 pattern) is an in between size; bigger than the Case Peanut (20 pattern) and smaller than the Case Small Texas Jack (032 pattern). I've had this one for several years - it's my choice when carrying a pen knife. OH

if only they made that in CV
and maybe some new handle choices
cool knife though :)

Ah, the great advantage of liking both stainless and carbon steels - any good knife will do!! OH

lol i blame this place. I think i am afraid case's stainless is bleh
i am ok with stainless, but i like my buck stainless better

might be entirely biased, but i have to admit to it

I've been thinking about the peanut, just worried it might be too small. Forgot to mention it above, but I definitely prefer CV to stainless.

The Peanut is really just an awesome knife that slices through everything. I use the long clip for food.... the shorter pen is my work blade. I use my knives pretty good and the Peanut really is a very capable pattern.

If you want to look bigger, the Mini Trapper is a great sized pocket knife that isn't too bulky. Medium stockman is another option.

I really think everyone should give the Peanut an honest try.

Sounds like I'll probably end up with a peanut eventually, one way or another. The stockman patterns seem a bit bulky to me since I don't really have a need for 3 blades. I'm used to doing everything with a 3" modern folder with one blade. Texas jack looks like the ticket for now though, gonna see if I can find one locally.

Not to confuse things even further but my favorite Case pattern is probably the Sway Back Jack. It's a good fit in the hand. If you held one you would see what I mean. And I love the wharnie/pen blade combo.

X2 on the peanut and mini trapper

Have they ever made the swayback jack cv (other than special runs) in any handle other than chestnut? It's nice but I really love that dark old red you see on the sway back gents.

I find no real faults with Case Stainless...... well, other than it don't patina.

I find stainless to be a very useful tool when the situation calls for it. I use a stainless knife for fishing. But for regular use there's just something about good carbon steel.

Give the peanut a whirl. I live in the country, a very rural area, but I work in the city. The peanut can be taken virtually anywhere in Baltimore, and is more than capable of most daily tasks. Also, I am a big guy with diabetic neuropathy, and have no problems for fine work, yet. I still like my one hand openers and larger slipjoints, but the peanut is really all I need, and all I really use anymore. Small, doesn't imprint on the pocket, doesn't freak non knife people out, great to have in this area ;) . Mine is also a worry stone. I lucked out, both of mine were gifts from good fellas here, a single blade damascus I carry everyday, and a two blade damascus I carry for special occassions.

Just be sure to put a bandana over it in your pocket, they like to jump!

Well, thanks too all who posted here. I ended up finding a swayback jack in cv locally. Can't post pics from tapatalk I guess but I'll try to get some up later.

By all means, post some photos! I'd love to see what you finally decided to get. Everybody always has such good suggestions; I don't see how a guy is supposed to make up his mind.
