My first day of the trip was off to a good start. Even having wireless access in my hotel was a nice touch. So everyone is getting the up-to-the-minute report of my Latin-America Tour. After visiting the labs and doing our assessment bit, we were invited to go visit the research station for the institute which is located near Progresso in the Yucitan, Mexico.

On the road there - a little church with that Mexican flair for colour

Coca-cola reins supreme in Mexico, not a single Pepsi ad can be had...

In Progresso itself...

If this picture doesn't say cowboy-mobile - what does????

This one definately says Mexico - in Peublo they still produce the 'original' bugs en-mass. They don't export them because these things can't pass any of the emission laws implemented in the rest of the world

Also - didn't see a single Corona sign up, Sol all the way. One of the beers I'm really enjoying here is called Bohemia - nice and hoppy

On to the wilderness bit, or at least some of the coastal wetlands. Near the research station was this huge tidal marsh and salt flats. A great place to watch the birds.

Ran into a flock of pink flamingo's. Apparently their estimated count is 40,000 pairs!

Well I just have to suffer another night in this god-forsaken place...

Tomorrow will be a drive to Chetmaul, which is just a straight cut through the jungle. No hills in this area so I won't expect to get any good pics. Perhaps Mexico City will bring something of interest later in the week. Then off to Guatemala city!

great pics man... i wasn't expecting those last shots of the pool...:o they threw me off a little...

Thanks Mike - acutally I prefer a tent to the 'organized water polo' play area. But what can you do when others book your reservations for you????

I can just imagine your pain...

Have a good trip kgd!

Oh yeah, Coke does RULE!!!

When I first read about the pink flamingos, I was thinking, "How many of those Bohemias did he have?"

Doc

80,000 flamingos, that's amazing. Really great and interesting photos. I'm looking forward to more. Thanks.

kgd,

Outstanding, but where is the Mexican Beach Women's Volleyball team when you need them? :D

Those shots are fantastic....great color. What kind of camera were you using?

That pool must've been a welcome sight after spending all day in the sun. Looks gorgeous! I really enjoy seeing pics of places and habitats I've never visited.
