I'm typically seeing pivot barrels in 3 lengths: .5 (1/2), .3750 (3/8"), and .280 (9/32?)

Anywho, I assume its typical to get purchase the closest barrel length without being too short, and grind it down to proper length, correct? No issues with getting the pivot screw(s) to thread after grinding? If so, any tricks?

Thanks!

yes grind it down to the length required
generally no problems with the threads, just remove any burrs.

I haven't made any folders yet, from tutorials I've read, that's exactly what they do. I've seen them grind it down while captured in the blade on a disk grinder. What I'm not sure of is whether you want to leave it proud of the blade or not, I would assume a couple thousands proud would help with clearance.

However you grind it, I would suggest chasing the threads with a tap to make sure your pivot screws go in nicely.

Check to see if the barrel pivots are threaded from each side or from one end.

If the pivots are threaded from each side, the threads don't match in the middle. This means you need to remove material from both side of the pivot to keep the mismatched threads in the middle.

It is more difficult and expensive to thread pivots from one end. The advantage to the knifemakers is you don't have to worry about mismatched threads. Knifemakers can shorten one side and the pivot is ready to use. All our barrel pivots are threaded from one side all the way through.
