Been a while since I posted some work out here. Mostly been sticking to fixed blades as I learn more and more on each one.

Decided to try my first folder, and what better way to start than with a simple design, a friction folder. I really dig the style you can bring with a friction folder, so here we go.

I had a .25" x 1.25" x 4" piece of scrap 1084 sitting around, and though not the ideal thickness for a folder, much less one without a lock, I said what the heck.. lets do this. Roughed out the blade shape, made some cardboard cutouts of the blade and a generic handle and started testing pivot positions so the back of the blade and the handles would be flush and the edge would be in line with the grip. Once I got things right I moved on to drilling out the pivot and stop pin holes in my handle material (Orange G10). After test fitting and filing over and over I got the stop pin positions in the blade just right. Next I moved on to the back spacer (Jade G10 scrap). Got that fitted and put her together for a test run. All good. So next steps are profile the blade and maybe some file work. Still have to shape the handles and make the grip more comfortable, it's blocky and bulky right now. Ordering some screw pivots tonight and other goodies for a few more. Obviously the blade will have to go out for HT at some point.. but not till I have about 10 other blades done so I can send a full batch to save some $$.

Anyway, here are some pics. Excuse the long pins sticking out while I finish up fitting her.

I like it. Creative use of scrap... Nice little design, and I think it will probably have the strongest blade of any friction folder in history... :)

Update:

Got some parts in I needed so moved forward with the project today. Got my chainring pivot and bronze washers (.005). Did some sanding work on the G10 handles and profiled the blade. Got everything fitted and countersunk the pivot bolt. I need to get the blade tidied up a bit before it goes to heat treat. Handles need a little more love as well. Seems to work well so far... to be continue.

Sorry about the bad pics. I wish I was better at photography. Having a brother-in-law that is a professional you'd think I'd pick-up some skill... NOT!

Thanks for the kind comments Nick. I'll let you know when it gets back from HT and is finished, or if I make any others.

Thanks brother.

Kind of got stalled out as haven't had time to put much work into knives lately. Weather has seemed to cool down a bit. I'll try to get some more time in soon.

Its pretty much what I've been searching for. Not many frictions folders out there like that...

Ooh, nice! It's cute and handsome all at the same time. Love the beefy proportions.

Man looks great. Love the pivot you used. Just wish usa knife maker didnt charge like $4-6 a piece for them!!!
