This beauty arrived in yesterday's mail.
It is a Ray Lanconico Large Camp Knife in a design first posted here by Matthewdanger.

I got to take the knife out today and get some first impressions.
The knife is a brute being 1/4" thick 5160 steel with a flat grind and a polished convex edge. It feels great in the hand with the center of gravity at about the point where the blade grind ends into the ricasso.

I made it do a little work...
It quickly chopped through this maple branch.

It batons almost without effort.

I am not the best at fuzz sticks. However, this knife was a lot harder to make a fuzz stick with than my Bravo-1.

I hope to test this knife for food prep in the near future.

very sweet looking knife

i have wondered about the squarness of his handles...an issue for you?

"it felt great in my hand when I used it today."

sounds good

look forward to a review after some prolonged use

Is it possible that you had more difficulty, because you were fuzzing kind of close to some knots in the stick? Maybe if you had two fairly equal splits from the same log, and you fuzzed one with the Bravo and one with Ray's knife, the results might be different. Just my dos centavos. :) I don't have a dog in the race, but I'm always interested in fairness. And thanks for the photos.

Ray's knives are top notch. I have several, and I really like them. Even better, I always look forward to the next one!
