1st Knife, recycled junk.

LOL! My pants almost fell off laughing. Those suspenders would be about as accurate as I can get! Measure twice, cut about 10 times!

i saw them all the time in home depot. they are bright yellow too. more of a working mans suspenders for his tool belt than anything. you will never catch me wearing them.

Love the handle. I've made canes, and furniture out of plywood. Something about the finished ends that I find beautiful.

Po-Boy goodness right there. Good work.

this is why women need to not buy and use wooden tennis racquets if their husband is a knife maker. cant wait to see the next knife.
Yeh titanium makes better "tennis racquets" and knife handles when you accidently run it over with the suv because the wife did not put it away hehe :)

talking about rulers and tape measures....Oh my God, I have to tell you guys about something....about ten years ago I was at my dad's house helping him do some work around his house. I asked him to get me a tape measure, and he did....the end of it was all disfigured and stuff...I asked him if he had smashed it or something...and he said "No, the end was loose, so I peend it with a hammer to keep it from moving"....I checked and all of his tape measures were like this. I had to explain to him that they are loose for a reason. "They're loose so that you can measure on either side of the hooked end Dad! If you hook it on a corner, it pulls out and gives an accurate measurement. If you push it into a wall, it goes in and still gives an accurate measurement." All he said was, "No shit!?" I laughed my ass off for an hour that day. Gotta love "non-mechanically inclined" people, parents included!

Jacob, What do ya mean "can't wait to see the next wife"?

OOPS....went back and checked "...next KNIFE"

Sincerely. nice 1st one.....keep going but don't make the mistake I did with my first knife years ago, don't give it away...except to family, if you must.

And for Goodness Sake HAVE FUN!!

Thank you, and yep, it's fun but I'd rather it be fun and look like your knives!

then keep on making them. dont stop now. youve already started ont his hobby. you have to keep "forging" on. hehehe

Nice job on your first knife. I like that you used what you had around, but I wonder about the steel. Did you heat treat it? Or did you grind it cold?

You asked about the scratches in the blade. It looks like you didn't get the initial grinding marks sanded out before you started to move up in grits.
Start with 120 grit and sand the length of the blade until all those scatches are GONE.....Then move to a 220 and sand the width of the blade...once all your 120 grit scratches are GONE.....move to a 400 and sand the length of the blade till the 220 scratches are GONE....Switching directions when you switch grits will let you know just by looking a the blade when it is time to move up a grit. Just TAKE YOUR TIME...and make sure all scratches are goe before moving up.
Hope to see another soon.

Yes, I ground it then I heat treated it, don't know if I did it right though, I heated it with a torch until it was red, then dipped it in oil that was pre-heated to 180 degrees, let it cool, then stuck it in the oven for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. I have no idea what I'm doing, just read here and there! Wow, I enjoyed dipping it in the oil just for the big ol' cloud that came up, kinda surprised the neighbor! Thanks for the help!!

This reminds me of something my Dad used to say:"No matter how many times I cut it, it's still too small!"

I pretty much use "junk" to recycle into knives. Lawnmower blades, saw blades, (blades) aluminum engine parts, brass kick plates and actuater arms (bolsters), micarta, pvc, (spacers) old flooring, broken furniture, rubber road gators, (grips/handles) etc.

You may want to go ahead and clean up that steal.. sorry, s t e e l (nice score, btw) before corrosion scores the metal too deeply - personal experience there. BTW, your finish didn't look too bad at all (esp. first try). Some cases, those "scratches" add to the finish as character, not detract.

keep at it!

Nice job on your first knife, sounds like you are hooked. Better replace your wife's tennis racket though.

Blub,
If I were you I would do some testing to see if that steel is any good to even use. Take some and heat it red hot(check it with a magnet to make sure it becomes non-magnetic) and quench in some oil at about 135 degrees.
180 is to hot for your oil. Then put it in a vise and smack it with a hammer(Put your saftey glasses on for this one):D ---- don't want to end up like this;) ....If it breaks you got something to work with.
400 degrees for temper sounds like a good place to start(with most high carbons) but if your gonna do just one temper cycle...do it for at least 2 hours. Three one hour cycles would be better.

I think texture can add character....but "scratches" should all be going in the same direction and all the same grit. just my 2 cents.

How is #2 comming?:D
