Well I finally finished my first knife. Well everytime I think I'm done I'm out touching up one last thing,... but I'm close.

I'm still waiting to get a grinder, but this one was done with a hacksaw, files, Dremel Tool to rough out the handle and sandpaper.

Not perfect, but I guess for my first knife I'm happy. Nice to have a knife that fits my hand perfect! Well time now to start making more. Gonna be knifes under the Christmas tree this year.

Thanks for all your great tips and info!

That's actually a thumb print on the blade and not a grind mark.

Kraig,

That looks just fine indeed. Most excellent looking handle work too. You will really like the grinder once you aquire it. The wood on your knife looks very nice.

Very good for a first, heck that's good for a 100 rth! Don't know about sealing the wood, all I've ever used on an oily wood like that is Rienisance wax or Johnson's past wax.

Yeah, great work! It take huevos to do this by hand like you have, and to pull it off in such a nice clean way is a real accomplishment. Congratulations!

Not many people do this, but I use superglue to seal wood. A full coat over the whole handle, sand it off. It will buff to a high shine or you can sand it for a matte finish. Another alternative is to use some equivalent of Danish Oil. Only drawback to that is it takes quite a bit of time to complete the finish. It's beautiful though.

to quote the movie Friday "Damn Kraig!" Very cool and clean! Did you make a sheath yet?

I'll give that knife a thumbs-up. Nice design. Clean lines. Decent finish. I'd say you would be pretty dangerous if given some proper equipment! :)

Very good job! Beautiful lines, too.Higgy says that the photo would be better if your gal friend was holdin' it while wearin' her bikini.
Cocobola has a natural oil and doesn't need much sealer. As said, crazy glue (thin cyanoacrylate) will seal the surface of wood.Renaisance is my prefered knife treatment.I keep a soft cloth impregnated with it in a ziplok bag,and wipe all knives down after handling them.

Nice going. Like the design. Talk about designs get going on my website. :D :D Only kidding no hurry. Looks like you be able to do up some of the damascus I sent you.

Great looking first knife . I'd buy it. Check out Renissiance Wax to protect your wood and blade. Keep 'em coming

Hey that's a great first knife!!!

The handle looks like it would be comfortable, especially for a big set of paws!

Any suggestions on a sealer for the cocobolo and other hard woods? Not a gloss but just enough to protect against sweat and oil.

Watco for "teak" is for oily woods, and works well with Cocobolo . Just use it per the instructions.

blgoode - Haven't made a sheath yet. Not totally sure what style to do. I have some kydex, but somehow that doesn't seem to fit this knife. Has anyone made a kydex formed sheaths and then cover (bond with glue) with thin full grain leather? I like the stiffness of kydex but the look of dark leathers. Heck I've never made a sheath before so I may experiment a bit before I know any better.

Thanks for the kind words. Working with hand tools on my first knife gave me the time to think about what I was doing. And it took a long time for me to make a big mistake so it was easy to make corrections as needed,... though I was wishing I had a KMG every time I worked on it to speed the process up.
