The head for this pipeaxe was hand-forged by Stuart Willis - www.swillisforge.com -
I've worked with some fine smiths over the years and I can unequivocably say that if you are looking for a tomawhawk/pipehawk Stuart does a FANTASTIC! job ..........
The rest is by me - an eastern axe goes west: a super fine curly maple handle, with brass fittings, a rawhide grip, antler end plug and mouthpiece, a bit of beadwork, and a horse tail hair "drop".......

A 7" refurbished circa 1950's German hunter turned into an 1850's Frontier Bowie - with stag grip, copper ferrule, and brass guard - sheath is braintan over a vegtan core with beadwork and more....

Holy schnikies! Your work is incredible. Some day I'm going to make a knife worthy of your work... Until then I can only bow to you. :)

For about 5 or 6 years now I have been in awe at your tallent. Back then I didn't think it could get any better... I stand corrcted.

How do you come up with the designs for your work? The reason I ask is that you always seem to come up with the perfect sheath or other accoutriment to comliment someone elses work

I really hope to build a knife soon that will be worthy of your work. Until then I can only bow. :)

Rick

Very cool knives an hatchet. I love the old western look that you are doing

I reckon if you do anything long enough (48 years and counting)......;)

On my "frontier" pieces it's a matter of having studied the work done by those who came before for over 40 years and I still keep studying - from the works of the past I gain my inspiration - sometimes that inspiration comes quick - other times it's a fight all the way. Then I sketch things out, but things usually change as I go along and the final product often only has a passing resemblance to the sketches.
On other work more "modern" work I do pretty much the same, but the research usually takes a bit longer when it's out of my norm.....
and last but not least, is "that" which the good Lord imbued me with....

AMAZING WORK Chuck!! I haven't seen much of what you've made, but these pieces show your prowess and talent quite clearly...GREAT JOB!! :) Good on ya.

Chuck Burrows and Stuart Willis. Now that's a combination that can't be beat with a big stick. Congratulations guys! Awesome Hawk.

As usual I'm left with nothing to add after the previous comments. That's all just breathtaking, Chuck. Thanks for providing such a quality base for the rest of my day!

I sure understand about the research. I'm trying to figure out how to do a horsehair drop, but with a Mayan twist. For the life of me, I'm not having much luck getting inspiration. Probably will just end up doing what feels right for me and hoping for the best, but this helps me get a direction for my thinking. I've gone back to look at your previous work too, for that inspiration - and, I admit - for the techniques, the process. But I really have not been successful in deconstructing how you did the work, it's that well finished. Very cool.

I love your work. One day I will have pick the perfect knife and have you make a sheath for it. until then I just check out the pictures!

What a great team. You two have created some of the best authentic pieces Ive seen before. Thanks for posting them. Thats art!

Thanks for the compliments, Chuck just has a way with artistic finish work and leather work that is hard to match. I have worked with other people on hawks and it is really hard to get it to come together. But not on this one everything just seems to fit.

Beautiful knives and sheaths. If anyone needs a leather knife sheath no matter the style Chuck is your man. He can take a not so perfect knife and make it look perfect by just wrapping leather around it.
