I want to thank you guys around this subforum, this has been a huge help with the small tips that make a great difference!

I received today my 1st light my fire kit, and since I've been reading a taking tips here for some while, and the first thing I went to do as soon as I got it from the mailman was to pick up some cotton and vaseline to try it out.

Well, I had the impression that it was easy BUT it wasn't!!!
Until I realized that I was using the metal thing in the firesteel with the "UP" side, downside :p I guess that it's mailmans fault to deliver so early in the morning. :D

This was EASY, after I turned the metal thing to the right side and blast it to the cotton with the vaselina after3rs try to orientate the sparks, it was INSTANT fire! Got the second try to take the pics and was even faster.

I've bough too some Maya dust and Sticks along with it, but It seems that I won't need them as long as I have cotton and vaseline. Good stuff!

Some simple pics to share

congrats on the successful attempt!

is that a tube of vaseline? where did you get it? i have been looking for way to carry a small amount of vaseline in a med kit, and that looks perfect.

Great. Make yourself a better striker and it'll be even easier. (a broken section of hacksaw blade is perfect. Use the side without teeth.

I get these locally, in phamacy or in supermarkets. I'm from Europe though, dunno if it is just here that is easier to find this size, but these are very common.

I know what you mean, I have 1 in my 1st aid too :)

Thanks for the tip.

Oh boy, now you have entered the ranks, and will be looking for every other way to start a fire..... Its an addiction man. Good job though, I still get all excited every time....

Great job....on the pics and fire making .. try other methods as well, dryer lint works well too!

I just got my first fire steels as well and am addicted. I just got back from a campout and was laughed at for using it until they saw how well it worked.

I learned that the Vaseline doesn't work well with dryer lint. Well, it does, but it doesn't stay together as much and makes a mess of my fingers. But it keeps me from having to buy cotton when lint is free.

As far as finding a small tube of Vaseline - good luck. But you CAN use Neosporin, aka, triple antibiotic ointment. It comes in small tubes and is petroleum based. It also has other uses so is  for keeping in your pack.

now you just have to keep the fire going all night:D

good stuff guys, I remember my first non lighter/match fire, very exciting

I had the wife start her first fire using a fire bow this weekend, I thought she was going to do the Tom Hanks fire dance she was so excited,

keep trying new ways, you'll find them to be fun ,

my next to learn successfully is a hand drill,

I never put PJ on dryer lint...to messy, but in ideal conditions to me dryer lint is awesome, easily catches a spark and BAM Fire is born

Now its time to learn to use a flint and steel set.

Siguy,

Get yourself a small tube of triple anti-biotic ointment. Its vaseline based and kills nasties too. Burns great mixed with gauze. Mac

ETA - Sorry I see it was already mentioned. You can use chapstick too.

Try finding some FatWood when hiking and get a fire going with that, you then know that all you need is your firestriker and you can make fire, no dryer lint, no cotton balls, no vaseline etc !
The trick is to file the Fatwood to make dust.....

Man there will be no stopping you now !!!!!!

its resin impregnated pine wood, also called fat wood or matchwood or other names.

it is in the stumps of dead pine trees that died upright, so the sap all drained to the stumps. very awesome for starting fires. as seen in pit's post, you can start a fire without any other tinder, just scrapings and shavings of teh wood.

about the small tube of vaseline...i really like plain vaseline because its great for everything (protecting cuts, greasing pivots, moisturizing lips, etc) but hadn't even thought of an antibiotic creme.

Yeah, like siguy said !
This is how it looks when you first find it, without the knife poking out though unless you are real lucky !!!:D

Now... if I saw that knife sticking out of some fat-wood that I just happened upon when I was looking for it, well... that would just be dandy :D Even better than manna falling from the heavens.
