1st visit to Portland, decided my life needs to be in the NW

I need to take a trip over to the PNW. I think I'd fit better there. Everything looks beautiful.

Fellow transplant from CA. Moved to Oregon in 1977 (Bend, OR) and ended up in the Portland area in 1990. I've had webbed feet since. I may be ready to move to dryer climate when I retire though. It's been nice, but wouldn't mind the desert one day. Portland is a must see city, if you've never been. Something for most everyone.

You may not want to go as far south as LA though, summers are brutal on your AC bills. Some neighbors are getting wise and installing solar panels, can't do that in Oregon :D

Ten four, I was thinking Arizona. Isn't that where all the oldies go, when they retire.?
Thanks for the advice. Was thinking Sedona, or Scottsdale? Who knows? Still aways away from retirement

Az is much drier than LA County haha, but if that's kind of what you're looking for I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Where in Ca did you move from?

I was in the Campbell/San Jose area until 16 yrs old. When the family decided to move to Bend, Or., it was like going back in time 20 plus years. My brother and I were devastated by the change, and then we changed our tune, once we started meeting people. There were a lot of transplants, just like us. Also, a lot of natives that didn't like us moving there. I didn't blame them, and I can certainly appreciate it more so now.

Looks like this thread has been done before. Thanks Pro. Truth be known, it would be hard to leave, but I've always liked the desert. And like I said, retirement is aways away. May end up in Alaska, for all I know.

I moved here in '91 but I fell in love with it way back in '79. I grew up in the desert but i'm a mariner at heart so I need the coast. We do have some incredible high desert too though...

And you'll find burlesque shows every day of the week! I have 3 sideshow bookings next week, the hard part is getting paid in cash at a place that is down the road from KSF and not spending it.

Also I learned the hard way about turning left on Burnside.

Took the job I have now so I could retire to Washington. I've been all over the world and this is home. Spent my childhood in SoCal back when it was "western" and the only thing I'd find in a days walk thru the canyons was wildlife. Miss that, but this is better.

I don't like Portland, but I don't like big cities in general. WAY to many people for me...
The cool thing about the Portland area is, there are a lot of the major players in the knife industry.
Benchmade , Al Mar, Kershaw, Gerber, Leatherman, and CRKT. I know I'm forgetting some, but I'm having a brain fart for some reason

Hahahhahha , I agree . This is not a big city .
I too moved from California , Bakersfield to be exact . I will NEVER move back to California. I love this place !

I love Portland too but it is far too big for me. I live in a city of 2,081 people. That's big enough.:)

Big city? Really? Good one! :D

Granted, it isn't big compared to other big cities, but PDX proper has a population of over 600,000 people. If you included the surrounding cities that are basically an extension of PDX, the population is over 1.3 million, and at least two times a day, every one of them is on the road lol..

:D Unfortunately Bend is a little over 70,000, but the area itself is so small, it seems a lot bigger. I'm thinking we might be moving to the Powell Butte area, and that will drop the population down to about 2400. That is a lot better, but still to big :D

California is just so... urbanized compared to Oregon.
I mean, you can start in downtown LA, go east say 50 miles, and count how many cities you'd go through compared to Portland.

NYC (native) >Seattle 1991...coming up on 25 years here....never looked back. Portland is a wonderful town...much the same energy (Portlandia humour could apply to both places...such as this - obligatory stay where you are content). Both Seattle and Portland are graced with access to a tremendous diversity of landscape and natural wonders within hours drive. From lakes to ocean, to desert to mountains. Easy in, easy out. Compared to LA, its very easy to get around here, though Seattle is behind the bar on that note. Still, easier than most big cities. Climate is idyllic for my own tastes, but if you like the sun and heat, well, it ain't SoCal, that's for sure, though it's also not the Seattle of stereotype "PacificNorthWet" either, especially with current climate changes - this has been a banner winter for us. Kind of contradicts the Portlandia sketch, I know. Summers are gorgeous...we use AC perhaps 3 weeks out of the year....most don't use it at all. Portland's climate is very similar to ours. Portland = Big little town Seattle = Little big town. Then there's this as well (many articles have been written predicting similar).
