A friend of mine has a used 1X30 grinder for a very good deal, but before I buy it I wanted to know is it very useful?
Also that would be my first grinder.
Thanks.

What is"a good deal"? I am new to knife making and I bought a harbor frieght grinder for About $40. It has been very useful to shape handles and make bevels but it can't really be compared to a bigger belt grinder meant for knives. If you are buying it knowing that it has many limitations - id say go for it . I will eventually be getting a 2x72 grinder but until then, I do appreciate this little machine.

Might be ok to shape a handle but beyond that?? They go on sale for super cheap so I wouldn't pay much for it. The Sears 2x42 is a good starter and can be had for $125-$150 and is 100 times better than a HF 1x30.

The 1x30 from HF will indeed let you put bevels on your knife (takes about 30min-1 hour) and it is fantastic for handle work, but it won't compare to the larger grinders. If you can, save up and get the 2x42 from sears. If you can get the HF for $40 or less and just want to get some practice grinding go for it. Also there are mods all over the internet to help make the HF easier and more efficient to use. With the HF you will absolutely need to get some decent belts, the ones that HF sells are total crap. I use the 1x30 from HF and so far I have loved it. I'm in an apartment so I don't have much space and can't make much noise. It works perfect for what I need it for. That being said, I would much prefer a larger grinder if I had the space.

I made my first 19 knives on a 4x36" grinder, and just upgraded to a 1x42" model for my last two knives. If you are fine with the price (check Craigslist etc) and have the passion it wi work for you! Files and a clamp are really all that are needed, so any grinders that will remove metal can be a benefit in my mind. While it won't be top of the line, it will help you "mangle steel and make dangerous dust"! Good luck getting your feet wet and most importantly have fun!!!

I started on a HF 1x30 and its great for shaping handles and sharpening blades but you will outgrow it quickly. After a month or so I bought a Craftsman 2 x 42 and have now outgrown it. It works great, just a limited selection on belts. I am now making a DIY 2 x 72 grinder. The belts for a 2 x 72 last longer, you have a better selection, and they cost about the same as the other sizes. By the way I paid about $30.00 or $40.00 for my HF 1x30 and its well worth if thats all you can get; even better if you can get one cheaper. I agree with the others in trying to get something bigger if you can.
