Was just milling around Texas Knife supply and saw a 2 1/2 by 48 belt grinder for $450 w.motor flat platen and contact wheel. Thoughts about this?

The standard 2x72 is the easiest to get belts for.

Disc grinders are getting a lot more popular. They will produce a beautiful flat grind.

If you are building a shop piece by piece, focus on one item at a time and purchase the best you can afford.

I no this is not much help on about your specific grinder; but wanted to give you my opinion.

Best of luck and keep us posted, Fred

You can build the NWGS for close to that price and have a much better choice of belts, as Fred has suggested. Plus, you'll have the satisfaction of making your own grinder.

i like the look of a coote grinder
dont have to keep changing accesories
built for 2x72 in belt
2.5 seems like an odd size

speaking of disk Fred how are they used to grind 2nd side of blade?
edge in on 1 side and edge out on other?

been trying to figure that one out....

That grinder is an OK unit. It is portable (mount it on a 2'X2' piece of plywood). The belts are no problem to get. I have one of those Ickles grinders.

I do all the major work on the 2x72 and move to the disc when I want to get the bevels perfectly flat.
You have it, as to the positioning. I watch the back edge of the disc where I can watch the disc approach the ricasso so as not to ruin the edges on the plunge cuts.

The biggest problem with this grinder is that it is underpowered and you have no clearance on the motor side. The wheel is mounted directly on the motor shaft and for the small wheel you just cant hold it properly. The grizzly is a better grinder for the price. I used one for 8 years then got a square wheel grinder for my first true grinder. I would work for two days grinding 8 knives out getting ready for heat treat. When I received the square wheel i did that many in four hours. just my two cents. Mike

It's amazing to me how often an "l" gets put into my name. By the way Stacy, did you get your carving books back?

Yes, I thought I emailed you. Sorry if I didn't.Got the books back. Hope they helped.

BTW, I mistyped. It is an Ickler grinder.
