My son is going off to college in a city that allows legal carry of blades that are 2.5" or less. This means that his current edc (a griptilian) is too long. What folder with a blade 2.5' or less do you suggest I might him for edc? Thanks in advance for sharing your experience with me.

I carry a SOG Twitch II.

Blade is exactly 2.5".

It is an auto-assist so you may want to check the legality, but I end up carrying it more than anything else (fits well in dress slacks)

Here is something really special: a compact Kyocera pocket knife with their best ceramic blade (tremendously hard). I have one and it's really refined and usable. The blade is 2 inches long.

The Dragonfly (which can be had in 4 different handle variations, black FRN, white FRN, stainless steel, and acid etched-stainless steel):

The Lava (I consider this the best sub-2" bladed folder available):

Lava and the Subcom are nice.
I agree, CLB makes some really nice, inexpensive, quality, small folders. I just got a Sub Claw and its really nice in hand. It went right to my girlfriend. I gotta get another.

I didn't forget it, but THG already mentioned the Spyderco S (the newest incarnation of the Salsa series) in his post. I have a Ti Salsa, and its blade is right at the 2.5" mark. I suggested the Dragonfly (2.25" blade) and Lava (1.8" blade) specifically because the OP mentioned "legality" and a "maximum length of 2.5 inches", and I thought I'd give him some wiggle room, which is always a good thing in my opinion.;)

Hello Sharp Eye,

I think this is the perfect knife for every day carry regarding your son's situation.

(1) The largest blade out of its three, is the master(clip) blade, at a fuzz less than 2.5 inches.

(2) Its a traditional type pocket knife slipjoint. You know, the kind our Granddad's used to carry every day, and wouldn't even raise an eyebrow from the sheeple out there today.

(3) Its drop dead gorgeous and the best darn cutter you can buy for the money, not to mention easily attainable. Made in the USA by W.R. Case model # 6.5318 at less than $50.USD.. She is pretty dawg-on hard to beat.

I wish you and your son all the best and I hope and pray he makes the deans list for all the right reasons and makes his Pappy proud!

Many Blessings,

Anthony

Fallkniven U2 is a great little knife and it is listed at 2.5". I carry mine often. The power steel gets super sharp and holds it a long time. Very non-threatening, as well.

Another one that I like is the Alpha Dorado by Buck. It, too, is right at 2.5". Comes in two versions, one is ATS-34 and the other is 420HC. Both are very nice one-hand openers. They have a good deal of heft, fit the hand well, and are non-threatening.

Oh, and don't leave out the little Byrd Robin. Has a razor edge and great to use. The finger notch uses up some of the stated 2.5" blade, but still a great little knife. Comes in a stainless handle or black FRN.

Those are great suggestions.
I will check them out.
Anyone have any others that they like?

I agree. The shape and construction make it cut like a big knife, but its small enough to fit in the 5th pocket (whatever its called) of a pair of jeans. Very sturdy construction.

A Swiss Army knife might do the trick as well, depending.

How much DO you want to spend? Do think about that question though, it would help us to be able to help you.
My 2.5 inch blades are all customs. But, I CAN recommend some non-customs. The Fallknives U2 is a great knife! As are the following Spyderco's:
Lava, Dragonfly, Spin, Ladybug (a very small knife.), Kopa. You could always get him a SAK; Alox Soldier.
