2.5 inch folder

How much DO you want to spend? Do think about that question though, it would help us to be able to help you.
My 2.5 inch blades are all customs. But, I CAN recommend some non-customs. The Fallknives U2 is a great knife! As are the following Spyderco's:
Lava, Dragonfly, Spin, Ladybug (a very small knife.), Kopa. You could always get him a SAK; Alox Soldier.
Good point T.K.C. I forgot to include the price point in my original post.
I would like to spend around $70 but would consider knives that cost up to $100

Do you want a knife for him with one-handed opening capability and a pocket clip? Does the type of steel matter? Does the handle material matter?

Thanks,
3G

One hand opening is preferred but not required.
A pocket clip is optional
I would like a decent stainless steel for this knife (something at least as good as AUS8 or 420C)
The handle material is not important.
It should have a reliable lock.
Thanks again for your help.

My pleasure. I whole-heartedly endorse the Spyderco Lava and Dragonfly models! I have both, and both have great grips (the Lava's grip, in my opinion, is the better of the two) for their size. They both have blades a bit under your son's required limit (2.5"), but not so short as to not be extremely handy. They both have VG-10 blades (the steel handled Dragonfly versions have VG-10, the FRN handled version has AUS-8), which make them superior to AUS-8 and 420HC in edge-holding, yet still easy to sharpen. The Spyderco front-lock (mid lock-back) is used on both models and is very secure. They both have pocket clips and Spyderco opening holes. They can each be purchased for less than $100, and they both have limited lifetime warranties.

Thanks 3G, TKC and all who contributed great ideas. I have ordered an etched SS Dragonfly for my son (he wanted the extra blade length). I also have ordered a Lava for me to carry when I visit him.

Excellent choice, I have been wanting one of those for a while now. (the etched dragonfly)

Fantastic choices, Sharp Eye! The etched Dragonfly is the version I have and I love it. I find the etching provides a good grip on the stainless steel handle. You will absolutely love your Lava, too. My best wishes to you and your son.:)
