Is $2,500 - $3,000 a fair offer for an original pivot Wilson combat startac Umnumzaan? Ive been waiting one for so long & realized I’m going to have to spend some serious money to complete my collection. What are y’all’s thoughts - enough? Or am I wrong? Desperately searching. In the meantime - check out the current CRK display case! IMG_3907.jpeg

Is the knife materially worth $3k? No, but that doesn't answer the question of its perceived value to you. Most of us have a lot more than that amount invested in this hobby, but usually not in one knife. I'd personally find something else to do with the cash if it were burning a hole in my pocket.

Nice collection, btw.

Awesome collection! Sorry I cannot answer your question, but you could always post a thread in the WTB section.
If you really want it, go for it! It is a lot of money but there are folks that have dozens of $500 knives…
And it’ll last a lifetime, even if you do decide to use it at some point.
Good luck 👍

If you got that particular itch and the means to scratch it ...!

Just for me : No , HECK NO !

Are you TOTALLY debt free?
Do you have an aggressive savings plan for retirement, and are already ahead despite the current economics?
Are your children and spouse(s) covered through education?
Do you have a MSA to carry you through $250k of medical expenses? (Yup, that’s coming)
Can you afford to lose $3000 on a casual wager and still pay for dinner with cash?

If you can’t answer “YES” to all of those questions, put your money away and quit chasing something that matters only to you.

If you can answer “YES” to all those questions, go for it. Have a blast. Spend $3000 on a knife worth $400 in fit/finish/materials.

I love CRK knives and have tactically overspent on a few models to get something I loved and CARRIED.

You’re asking to do something different. You want to spend on a safe queen that resonates with only 0.000001% of the population. That kind of expense requires truly disposable income.

Good luck and best wishes to you. I hope you have the income to execute this recklessness. It restores my faith in the American Way

If you would get $2500+ of enjoyment then it could be a good buy. It was around a $600 knife and will never be better than that . The rest is premium, just to own it.
Not for me

Respectfully, I think this is a bit overstated. Most gainfully employed adults can afford to entertain a hobby while still working toward financial goals. Knives aren't terribly expensive as a hobby when compared to, say, motorcycles or cars, even firearms. Three grand is an appreciable sum, but it's not the difference between sending your kid to state school or the ivy league. It's easy to spend more than that on a vacation.

Call me crazy, but I've always thought the original pattern was the best-looking one. Also not big on the co-branding, maybe I would be if I was a die-hard Wilson Combat fan, but I run a Les Baer.

Also, these rarely come up for sale, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're worth more. It becomes more of a matter of what's acceptable to the particular buyer and seller. The original pivot cost what, $30 to replace? I know it was under $50. So that additional cost is purely intrinsic. Who can say if this particular knife will remain significant enough to collectors in the coming years to retain that value.

I think you missed my caveats. There are lots of way more expensive hobbies than vanity knives. That wasn’t my point. The price of entry for all of them doesn’t match the return. It matters not if you collect knives, sports cars or match books. Yes, there’s a relevance of scale but not an equality of worth.
That's a wealthy man's game there. Even if I had the money I wouldn't pay that for a Zaan. I would pay that for the right walter brend fixed bowie though.
This. Right here. If you can afford it, do it. Only know that $3000 spent on certain knives has a better outcome than the same $’s spent on this Zaan.

Sometimes I like to go on BHQ and look up the most expensive knife and get mad when it's sold out, never caring a lick about buying it, but getting mad that someone else is so money-wasteful
And that's what I like to do with my free time

You can buy 27 full length kabar USMC's with that kind of money --- just saying
3000 on one knife ---
Pure collectors decision there

For a knife to sit on a shelf? 3000?

Not a freaking chance for a knife to sit on a shelf.

For a 2011 Umnumzaan OP with logo on the LBS in new to excellent condition I would trade 5 of my CRK, slip that bad boy into my pocket and go to work.

Cost the same 2500-3k-ish

Different strokes and all that…

I say go for it! If its important to you then that's all that matters. Many of us are not able to participate like this. Nice collection as well.
