2.5inch blade for EDC

Hello everyone,

The company I work for has a 2.5inch blade limitation on knives carried. In Utah there isn't anything dictating the length of blade, but I do want to be in compliance with company guidelines.
I normally carry a Spyderco Tenacious but unfortunately, that falls into the category of being too long.
I live in Utah and have the luxury of being able to head down to BladeHQ to check out knives in person which helps tremendously.
I'm in need of recommendations for a knife I can carry for basic use, such as opening boxes, cutting cardboard etc.
I'd prefer a pocket clip and tip up carry if possible(not a requirement). My price range is under $40.
I know that Spyderco has the Ambitious, but am open to other options.

Thanks in advance for your time and comments!

Spyderco Dragonfly. 2.25" of flesh rending VG-10 steel.

I appreciate the recommendations. The Cat might work. The Dragonfly, unless I found it used is not within the budget I'm trying to stick to.
Other knives I'm looking at are(not in any particular order)
Cold Steel Tuff Lite
Spyderco Ambitious
Ka-bar Mini Dozier

If i were you I would talk to my boss and ask about the policy.

Most of the time, some basic policies like this are not truly cared about or just generically copy-and-pasted into employee guidebooks.

Ask your boss, chances are he might not even care what you're carrying, within reason of course.

From the information I'm getting, the lawyers got it from many of the big cities in the US that have a 2.5 blade length limit.
As you suggested, it was a copy/paste scenario. I spoke to our HR department and they don't have an issue with it.
My immediate Supervisor on the other hand is the one being a stickler. I don't feel like going above him because I know it will strain our working relationship.
As silly as that may sound, I'd prefer just to buy another knife to avoid it.

+1 on the Dragonfly. For me, having the choil allows the most grip-wise out of such a small package.

I've seen dragonfly's for right at that $40 mark. If that's too much, there are some other really nice offerings from spyderco as mentioned. The spydie Chicago is one to look at, 2" 440C blade, G-10 handles. Seen them online for $35ish.

Maybe I'll give BladeHQ a call and see if I can trade in my Tenacious. I just got it last month.
Or get the Dragonfly as well. I just like how the Tenacious fits in my hand.

another vote for the Cat. fits your needs/specs, and is a darn good knife

That's unfortunate that the big guy is being a bit of a stickler.

Good luck to you and your hunt, half the thrill is the search.

Would a traditional knife be something to consider even though it has no pocket clip (well and no lock)?
If so I could add a few suggestions later...

Spyderco Manbug hanging off the keychain. Can be found for right around $40. It has a 2" blade and weighs under an ounce.

I'm another vote for the Dragonfly. Excellent knife.

On the other hand, I have a Ladybug in ZDP-189 hanging from my keychain, and it's a cutting son of a gun! And, if memory serves, I got mine from a large internet retailer for your price.

box cutter, easy to use, won't dull your good blades, you can get ones that fold and even clip to your pocket it you want.

The Tuff Lite makes a fantastic box cutter/utility knife, due to the wharncliffe blade and paper thin hollow grind. AUS-8 won't be the best edge holder if you're gonna be cutting LOTS of cardboard, but a simple ceramic pocket V sharpener or a small crock stick (like a Lansky dog bone) carried in the pocket will take care of that.

$40 price range is tough. I would echo other's sentiment and go with a dragonfly or manbug. I have the manbug zdp-189 on my keychain and use it all the time. It really does act bigger than it's diminutive size.
