2.5inch blade for EDC

I have most of the mini Spyderco models getting recommended here and IMO, none of them can compare to Cold Steel Tuff Lite for actual use. Plus you can get the Tuff Lite for ~$30 or so.

I highly recommend one of these, at least if you actually need to cut any amount of stuff:

Boker Nano FrameLock in orange or green look very friendly. Blade is only 2 inches and they go for around $40.

From the information I'm getting, the lawyers got it from many of the big cities in the US that have a 2.5 blade length limit.
As you suggested, it was a copy/paste scenario. I spoke to our HR department and they don't have an issue with it.
My immediate Supervisor on the other hand is the one being a stickler. I don't feel like going above him because I know it will strain our working relationship.
As silly as that may sound, I'd prefer just to buy another knife to avoid it.

Nothing silly about that man, that's sensibility. I agree with the various spyderco suggestions, they make great little knives.

Now it doesn't have a pocket clip, but for what it sounds like your main use will be I'd reccomend a Svord Mini Peasant. Great little knife.

Cold Steel Tuff Lite for sure, you won't regret the security of the ergos which makes it feel like a secondary extension of your hand.

SOG Twitch 2 ~ $40, assited, lockback
SOG Flash 1 ~ $35, assisted, piston lock
Buck Vantage Select small ~ $25, flipper/hole/ linerlock
Kershaw OD-2 ~ $20, flipper thing, linerlock

I was going to say Kershaw Chill as well, but I think it's over 2.5. The Dragonfly is a neat little knife too, but its blade's cutting length is more in the realm of 1.8 inches and it might be beyond the budget. But if you can get a good price definitely consider it

Splurge a little and get yourself a dragonfly2. They are awesome little knives that do big work. And they feel surprisingly great in the hand for such a small knife. The ladybug and manbug are also good options, but don't feel as good in the hand without holding it with a lanyard.

Small Buck Vantage. Here is the Avid level with dymondwood scales and Sandvik steel (still under $40):

Here's how it flips if you give it a little TLC:

I appreciate all of you taking the time to comment.
It's good to see a few knives that weren't on my short list mentioned.
I'll have to go check them out in person and report back what I end up doing.

As I mulled over what to do; I remembered a folding box knife I've had for a few years.
Rather than spend the money on something to open packages with, I've opted to spend that money down the road on another knife.

Good idea.

Yeah, man. Nothing wrong with that. Now save a few more bucks and get something really awesome!

I appreciate the recommendations. The Cat might work. The Dragonfly, unless I found it used is not within the budget I'm trying to stick to.
Other knives I'm looking at are(not in any particular order)
Cold Steel Tuff Lite
Spyderco Ambitious
Ka-bar Mini Dozier

I am a Spyderco fan, yet the Tuff-Lite gets equal time in my pocket. IMHO, one of the top five knives I have ever owned for EDC. I am still blown away at what I can cut with it. And what was said above....it feels like it grew out of your hand.......

Dragonfly 2 all the way. My beloved go to EDC blade every single day. The BEST 2.5inch or under folder in the world. A masterpiece of design genius, and to my way of thinking about EDC blades, Sal Glesser's best design ever. Period. I would part with my PM2 before I would dream of giving up my D2.

My first thoughts were: spyderco dragonfly, spyderco manbug (no clip), sog flash 1 (assisted) and cold steel tuff lite
My second thoughts were: Kershaw Shuffle, Kershaw Half-ton, Cold Steel Micro Recon

It's definitely a great idea try them in hand, good luck!

A lot of SAK's and traditional slipjoints fall under the 2.5in limit. My rough rider canoe is right at the 2.5in limit and is my favorite EDC, other canoes may have a slightly larger blade. I also check out some pen knifes and peanut traditional slipjoints to name a few more patterns. I have a Wenger Patriot which dispite it's small size is quite versitile, same thing would hold true for a Victorinox Cadet. I think the ka-bar mini dozier is 2.5in as well is well worth looking into but should be double checked for the size. You can also go to the exact opposite end of the spectrum and pick up an AG Russel Ultimate Pen Knife that has a 1.5in vg10 blade.

Opinels
spyderco ladybug, manbug, dragonfly

Just received a very nice little knife today, which was gifted to me by a fellow forumite:

The Kershaw 1770 OD-2

Blade length: 21/4 in. (5.7 cm)
Closed length: 3 1/8 in. (7.9 cm)
Overall length: 51/4 in. (13.3 cm)

And flips like the best of them (Lee Williams' OD flipper just rocks!)

As you might have guessed I am pretty excited about the little beauty at the moment :D

Lemme ask what kind of sharpening system do you have? The ambitious is a little chubbie but the ffg allows you to cut a decent amount of boxes. Cardboard is really rough on knives so you will have to touch it up often! Vg 10 holds up a little better. Maybe you need a boxcutter and a little edc? The ambitious was very ergo though for its tiny size. Its chubby and feel good in hand bit quite often the opening is gritty. A dragonfly will open much smoother.

Totally agree about the Dragonfly's ergos. I just wish Sal Glesser would make a fixed blade with the same ergonomics and size. :(
