2 brick forge question - torch neck very hot

I recently built a 2-brick forge based on the post from Atlas (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/920120-Virtual-BBQ-2-Brick-Forge-WIP) and it seems to work great, but as a newbie I do have one question. On the torch that I am using, the same one in Atlas' post, the neck of the torch right before it gets to the valve seems to get very hot. Is this normal and of no concern or do I need to put some sort of adapter going into the forge to keep this cooler. I just don't want to damage the torch or somehow overheat the propane tank.

Thanks.

You are probably putting the torch too far into the forge or the hole through the bricks is too small. The torch usually sits just shy of the outside of the forge to just barely inside the bricks. It should not be all the way in the hole up to the chamber. You have to play with it some and move it in and out ( start with it about 1/4" outside the forge).

A good alternative is to buy a burner from Atlas. The small 30K burner comes complete with hose and regulator and works fine in a 2BF.

For more info on tuning yur existing torch or getting a ne burner, send Charles at Atlas an email or PM.

Thanks for the info. I think I have the head too far in the forge. I will have to fire it up again and play with the placement a bit.

The brass next to the valve should stay cool for about an inch, the rest will get hot. The sublimating propane should keep the valve cool, but if it's too far in the chamber it will overheat and could begin to melt.
