Hello all,

Here are a couple of pics of my second sole-authorship knife.

Steel - 3/16" O1
Blade - 4"
Overall - 8 1/4"
Handle - Bloodwood
Bevel - convex

Always wanted a spear-pointed camp/hunter/skinner. Figured I would make one. Love the way the handle feels. The knife balances just behind the guard in the finger groove.

Wanted a knife that could handle anything, battoning a piece of firewood, or splitting tendons and joints when skinning.

The bloodwood was a new experience. My wife suprised me with that along with some burl and cocobolo scales recently. At first I didn't like the red of the bloodwood at all but decided to use because she had given it to me. Went through 2 4x36 belts, 2 1x30 belts and 2 6" discs just on the handle. Bloodwood really clogged up the belts and when that happened it would burn pretty bad. Gotta get one of those belt cleaning sticks. Really like how it feels though.

I hand finished the handles to 1200 grit and really won't go any higher. The handles are pretty slick as is.

The blade isn't the cleanest thing as far as the grind but not too bad for my second.

Anyway, any and all comments are always welcome. I come here to learn.

Thanks,

Charles

Charles,

VERY nice!!! I can't wait to get myself a belt grinder to cut more clean bevels. I'm currently using a 9" disc sander and some angled blocks to cut bevels with, and it's just not cutting it (pun intended)...

That's definitely one to be proud of! Keep up the great work.

Parke1,

Thanks. I used a cheap Harbor Freight 1x30 to grind the bevels. Gives a real nice convex edge when done with the edge trailing. The platten that came with it was not square and caused some problems when I was trying for a flat grind. I finally took it off and things got much better. I currently have a friend making a new 1x platten for it so I can perhaps get a flat grind. If you do get one of the 1x30's, don't buy the belts HF sells. They're junk. Order some from Pops Knife Supplies or Jantz Supplies, or anyone who has butt jointed belts.

Working on a leather pouch sheath for it now. I'll post some pics of that when it's done.

thanks,

Charles

Looking good man! Now get to tappering them tangs. =P That blood wood looks good.

Will be a while on the tapered tang thing. Honestly not a huge fan of the look. It does lighten the knife a good bit though. This one is definetely hefty.

How's the move going?

Charles

Sigh, long story man. I'll send you an emule. Cant wait to see more knives, o and the sheath. I wish I had started making leather back in the GHSS days! My leather skills could use some polishing.

Hello all,

Good goin bud! You made the steel TOO!?! :D Huhhuhhuh I know what you mean ;)

The bloodwood was a new experience. My wife suprised me with that along with some burl and cocobolo scales recently.

Cool wife! It's a blessing to be loved :)

Thanks for sharing and, golly gee whiz...ain't knifemaking fun ;)

i looked at the side view photo, and held my hand plam up to it, looks like the curve will slide right onto my hand, are ya sure you didnt make this one for me:)
nice job!

Charles, for #2, and the equipment you have, I'm very impressed. It amazes me to see this quality from a new maker. We'll be reading about you and your work In Blade one of these days:D
I'm a fan of tapered tangs like BigJim is also. I feel that if it's good enough for a Loveless knife, then I better learn how to do it also. Yes, it deffinately lightens up the back of the knife, but I like the way it looks, shows that the maker put that extra little bit in his knife. Anyway, I'm not harping (I never do that) but just giving my opinion since it was brought up. Try one some day and see what you think.
On this particular knife, with all of the massive blade up front, I can see that it probably balances better by not tapering.
I like your wifes choice of wood, glad you used it on this knife, sets it off really nice.
Did you forge the blade? Heat treat/temper? Courious about the numbers.
Looking forward to #3!

Khife Head,

YES, Knifemaking is way too much fun. I am hooked, for sure.

Wife is in her first trimester and thoroughly tired all of the time so I'm picking up the extra work around the house so she was feeling a bit guilty or something. I'll take it. :-)

Later,

Charles

rhrocker,

Always glad to hear opinions or suggestions and I will have to try a tapered tang in the somewhat near future. Broke down and ordered some spacer material and am going to try that on my next knife.

This one was from flat ground O1, stock removal. I heat treated it myself based on recipes I found on these forums. I haven't tested it for hardness but do plan on it. So far it's passed the file test and has held up well to cutting. So we'll see.

I spent a lot of time studying others makers knives, reading, and browsing forums and the web before I tried my own. Before that I had done 3 knife kits that I'm very happy with. Also lucked up and have been able to spend some time learning with the Graham Brothers here in Cleveland, TN.

Thanks again for the comments and suggestions.

Charles

Good Looking knife for number 2. It is fun making a knife that you can use and be proud of:thumbup:
I like the Blood Wood handle.
I bought a board of it and turned it into knife scales. But I found out I break out in a rash that lasts up to 2 WEEKS:mad: It is as bad as poisen ivory to my skin. I still use it when I have the itch:rolleyes:
I like the idea of tapering the tang and a colored spacer. But your the maker and make the knives to your own taste.

Nice knife. Don't worry about the grind, they always get better the more that you make. Don't agonize about the plunge being equal on both sides, they too will get more even as you do more grinding.

Charles,
Looks good, I look forward to seeing it in person. Make sure and bring it by the shop, when you get a chance.
The Bloodwood looks good, always listen to the wife, they are smarter than we are. :D
