Caveat: I haven't seen the show (and I think it's called "Knife or Death"). I think that "weird guy"might be a maker here on BF.
ETA - I think it was "Big Chris".
Big Chris did compete. But he was not the one with the two handed cleaver/chopper.
There have been people on the show use some world class blades. Dan Keffler had one of his knives on. Big Chris, and a few other competition choppers. I saw a Carothers chopper on the other day.
One of the issues that seems to be cropping up, is that the contestants are made to wear gloves (like cut resistant gloves) lots of them have grip issues.
Big Chris did not!
But the lady that was using the Dan Keffler competition chopper did. Several have lost their grips and had the knife dangling by the lanyard.
I have a couple of Busse I think would do well. KZII, and a WTF BG....but at 12 inches, and 11.5 inches, a few of the targets would be easier with a tad bit more blade length.
I'd like to try my beater Bastard sword on that course, but I'd have to modify the grip a bit, and thin/lighten it a bit. It is pretty heavy. I'd also like to try this battle axe. I believe the blade edges measure more than 12 inches, not counting the curvature!
If I could pick a sword or knife, I'd probably take a Dan Keffler Super Assissin design. Ive seen him take down an 8 inch tree in two strokes with one.
Or one from many other makers.
A Busse short Butanku would aquit its self well, if you practiced, tuned the edge/grind a bit. It is a little heavy to swing at easy targets like a fowl, or at the ground and then to have to check the swing, especially with a single hand swing.
Shoot, people have done well with 100 year old Barong's and other knives.
There are a few cuts that favor the longer edges, like the buckets, and the bit 5 gallon water cooler jugs. All the rest can be cut with a shorter blade easily.
The fish cut, having a longer blade does help, mostly because it takes some of the skill necessary to line up the cut on the sweet spot out of the equation. If you can miss the sweet spot, and still have another 11 inches of blade past that, it can be a bit easier.
I'd like to see a few real cutting experts on the show put some better targets out. I'm always of the opinion a hanging pig or deer is great.....
