1. I have some Goncalo Alves that I am thinking of using as scales for a chopped I’m working on. I have a vague concern that it might not polish up as well as say Cocobolo. Has anybody got any experience with it?
2. Hidden Tang Kitchen knives, I’m about to heat treat 2 in 1095 and I am making 2 part wood handles for them, Ebony “bolsters” and Birsdeye Maple, Goncalo Alves or Cocobolo as a second piece. I’d like to glue the 2 pieced together and finish the handle off the knife. I just want to hear from anybody who has tried this.
Thanks,
Ray

IDK about GA on a knife, but S&W used it on their high-end revolvers for years (Model 29 .44 Mag, for instance) and it looked very nice with a glossy finish.

I think you'll like the goncalo alves (astronium sp.). I took apart an old shipping pallet made from the wood and I use it when I need an inexpensive, but hard and durable wood. It darkens up nicely with age.

Should work. Just keep in mind that if you use a light coloured open poures wood and a dark wood, you'll get dark sanding dust in the pores.
It happened to me but I like the way it gave more accent to the pores.

I love it. These two are both Goncola Alves finished in tung oil. Make as glassy or satin has you like. I need more of the stuff :D
