I have a 17xx rpm 1/3 hp motor. I would like to make a 2in wide belt sharpener. I assume 42 in would be a good length. I get so tired of sharpening kitchen, hunting, fishing, pocket, ect ect knives. Is there a affordable chassis premade setup? If not where can I get a drive wheel and a guide pulley? I would appreciate suggestions.

The problem is the speed at which it's going. When you're sharpening the very apex of an edge it heats up super fast and will ruin the temper. Even with a real slow variable speed 2x72 guys say you still need to sharpen wet. If you haven't bought anything yet I'd recommend you get the Grizzly Tormek sharpener clone. It has a stone wheel that water on it and a leather wheel for removing burrs.

You can sharpen with a belt grinder I do it all the time but like said above you need to have a variable speed and do it slow and practice. I use the 3M Trizac belts on slow speed. I would disagree about the wet sharpening not that it wont help or wont work, but JG is right you need to be careful or you will lose the temper. What I do is take a water bottle and cut the top off and plunge the blade in right after each pass then to a motor mounted with flannel cloth wheels charged with compounds to remove the burr. I also have the Grizzly Tormek clone and it works great but I can get a much better edge with the belt sander. Any questions you can shoot me a PM

As far as getting a setup it will cost you almost as much to buy the components to make a BS as it would to buy one. Check out Kalamazoo machinery for a 42" BS or like I said shoot me a PM.

I can't send pm's. I have been a member for a long time but I mostly just read not post. Anyway, I have a 1x42 Kalamazoo that I use for various things around the shop. The problem I have with it is the belts have somewhat of a U shape to them, a high spot in the middle. The drive wheel is beveled and so is the return wheel. So the belt is never really flat. I was hoping that going to a 2" setup would cure this, or possibly finding wheels with less bevel.

I built a VS 3/4HP 2X42 that maxes out at 750RPM. It works very nice for sharpening. Mostly I run it between 100 and 250 SFPM. It works a lot like hand sharpening on a stone, but the stone moves instead of the blade.

Your smaller motor and gearing it down to as slow as is practical should work. Use a 2" drive pulley and a 6" receiver pulley, and a 3" drive wheel. If my head math is right, that will give you about 200 SFPM .

If you can make it a wet sharpener, all the better.

A two inch will work much better than a one inch, I also believe there is a better selection of belts available for 2 inch grinders.
