2 more pics of the Spyderco Bushcraft !

It's my understanding that protos were made in 52100 [a ball bearing steel - the one that Swamp Rat uses bebadged as SR-101], and D2. The 52100 got dumped 'cos it was difficult shipping enough of it to the manufacturer. D2 was deemed to be too tricky for average shnucks to sharpen when in the Scandi format [ :-v wonder how that relates to the Scandis harder to sharpen thread ;-)]. I believe they have settled for the rather ordinary 0-1.

"While we in Britain see O-1 as rather ho-hum ordinary, it is not so in the US where it is not nearly so prominent...We are just too used to seeing it from all the UK hobby makers".

I think it will be made in Tiawan

More intresting, certainly from my perspective, is that Sal has said they have plans for a NASA version that will be a full flat grind in S90V with carbon fiber handles.

don't quote me - I am not in high state confidence

They could do away with the hole and put the spider symbol there.

It's akin to growing a huge wart on Salma Hayek's nose. :(.
Some might mutter the word, sacrilege!
Without the hole, it would be a far nicer looking knife, at least in my opinion. You be the judge. For me, I'll take my twisted panties and move on. :)
Doc

I guess we can agree to disagree Doc; if the lights were out would that wart on Salma's nose have any affect on the task at hand? It wouldn't bother me too much:D I will admit that I could understand the aesthetic displeasure of some, that's okay as there are several knife designs that have small features that I just don't care for either. As long as that feature doesn't affect function, it's less of an issue but could still affect the selling point of the knife. The diversity of us knife-nuts makes the world go round:thumbup:

ROCK6

it needs to be priced much cheaper than Dan Koster's bushcraft. Otherwise, I'd buy Dan's custom.

nice to see Spyderco pleasing the UK/European fans...

I guess I'll have to join Doc-Canada and the twisted panties crew, I think the hole looks pretty bad. OTOH, I think the spyder logo would have looked very classy. Misplaced marketing me thinks. Would it affect my choice to purchase, yes, I would not buy it because of the hole.

I think I'd make some sort of bearing to fit the hole to use with a bow drill.

Surely you jest.

Actually no; I talked to Rod about the hole and he explained its use...I opted not to have the hole, but it does have a legitimate purpose.

 You just ruined everything I knew to be true in life! :D

To be honest, that lanyard location in the Spyder hole makes a lot of sense to me.

Aha, mea culpa amigo. I was too brief. The train of thought I had in mind was that would kill the project stone dead. If some people are already reluctant with it in the current position I imagine an en masse vote with the feet for that. Far too niche for a production blade surely?

You know, ever since I saw the first pictures of the Spyderco Bushcraft, I thought, "that looks like a good knife...because it looks exactly like all bushcraft knives look."

Granted I am not a collector of anything so the act of collecting has no appeal for me. But I do get a kick out of the fact that lots of guys seem to be salivating over this thing...why? It's going to work exactly like any of about a dozen knives we all know and own on this forum!

I am not down on this knife or Spyderco at all...but it's hard for me to get excited about a Honda Civic...now available not only in turqoise, but also in TEAL!!! You know?

As I see it the reason is the potential for giant slaying. And here's the thing. Why should a handmade one be any better if they both use the same design and materials? This is something I wonder about a lot. For sure there are lots of handmade knives that have appeal, and there are lots of handmade knives that are one of a kind, but when for all practical purposes they are indistinguishable why should the handmade one be preferred? If a custom maker makes one similar to this, in O-1, and a similar stabilized / impregnated wood handle, yet he is going to make you wait a year for it and charge you 4* as much what's the advantage. It's not like you'd expect some wonder heat treat quality control that Spyderco doesn't have. In fact, even if you bought one and had a custom handle of your choice put on it you may still come out ahead.

Thought experiment: Try the inverse too – If a hobby maker makes a replica BRKT Bravo form the same stuff Bravo X is made from, should it cost more / why?

[mmm, I can't do collecting either, or making little lists]

I'm glad to see this knife. I'm hoping for that $100 price point, too. Can we get the hole to be bug-shaped? If not, I agree with the fellow who said to just put the laser bug in place of the hole. Now, if we just get some nice steel...

The NASA version sounds great!

I like the hole.

I'd like to see a sheath with a pin lock retention system like has been done with the Busse Talon Hole.

OK, now there is another use.....keeping the knife secure.

The hole is the Spyderco trademark. Like it or not, it's gonna have a hole. And like opinions, we all got em.

I am probably wrong but I always thought the hole was a trademark thing and was required. Not sure if trademark is right word.
