2 Questions - How do you wear your sheath?

I like a dangler sheath, but not too long. Just enough dangle out of the way when I sit or move around, but not enough to swing wildly when I'm walking.

I also like being able to put a sheath on and take it off easily without removing my belt (also good to attach it to pack straps or the like which can't be removed). Something like a Teklock or a toggle on a dangler loop let me do this.

I carry a medium-sized knife in a leather drop-loop sheath, crossdraw, on my left side. My pistol goes on my right side. Smaller fixed blades go in pouch sheaths in my pocket, with the sheath hanging from a lanyard attached to my belt. I carry large choppers in a separate, kydex sheath, either in my pack or attached to a 4-wheeler.

I like my sheath slung low in a dangler rig. There's nothing that annoys me more than having to pull the knife up into my arm pit to clear the sheath on a high-ride rig.

That being said, I dig when I can opt out of the dangler somehow for special situations. Sometimes I need a more secure option, in leu of comfort. So either a removable or tuck-away-able dangler is nice.

I carry my small (3.5" blade) scandi in a leather dangler sheath on my right side. This is a homemade setup and it's friction fit only. I've never had the knife come loose or fall out, in 2 years of EDC carry. I don't see the need for a retention strap in this case, but if I were bugging out or in a survival situation it would be very important that I not lose my knife, and thus I would opt for a retention system of some kind.

My bigger knives go on my belt left side (crossdraw), or in a baldric on the left side.

One setup I liked was Daniel-Day Lewis's in "Last of the Mohicans." He's got this "IWB" (inside beltband?) crossdraw sheath, which allows him access to the knife with his right hand for utility purposes, but also a fast reverse grip draw in his left when fighting with a tomahawk in his right hand.

Kydex (duh) inverted with paracord loops on my belt.

1) What way do you most commonly carry the knife, with a belt loop, a dangler braid, or a D-ring, etc?
My preference in most situations is a belt loop sheath, carried just behind my strong-side hip. For aestetics I prefer a well made leather sheath, but those are not too common with factory blades these days, so well designed kydex sheath is a close second. I generally find plastic sheaths too bulky and uncomfortable.

2) What other options do you think are mandatory in such a sheath?

For smaller knives I prefer a pouch type sheath while for larger ones a retaining strap set up is fine (as long as it works; the old Ka-Bar sheath with the retaining strap up near the pommel of the blade was an example of one that didn't work). I don't care for "danglers" as I like the knife to be a bit more stable during drawing and sheathing. I never warmed up to drop sheaths secured to the thigh, either.

.

Considering a sheath, for a bushcraft/camping/outdoors knife, in the 3 to 6 inch blade range....

1) What way do you most commonly carry the knife, with a belt loop, a dangler braid, or a D-ring, etc?

2) What other options do you think are mandatory in such a sheath?

1 : I most commonly carry a knife under 5" with a belt loop. I like danglers while camping, but not hiking. Any knife the size of the RC-5 or larger gets strapped to the pack or on a Baldric.

2: In a belt knife I think the sheath needs to have a firesteel loop, and solid retention. I prefer deep pouch sheaths.

I prefer a dangler though a drop loop is OK. I hate a sheath that puts the handle of the knife above the top of my belt. I occasionally will use a baldric or neck carry, it all depends on the knife. Leather is my preference.

A firesteel loop is nice to have but it's not mandatory.
